Tantalizing Tuesday

Welcome Author
Amber's Avatar

Amber Skyze
!!!

Sorry folks, I'm posting this author interview for Gracen, so I don't have any witty or insightful comments to make about this author. In fact, this author isn't really known to me. So, on to the interview!

GRACEN: When you stop to consider trends and traditions, June marks a time of beginnings (marriages, commencements). What about you, any weddings, anniversaries or graduations to attend this month?

AMBER: No wedding, anniversaries or graduations, but I am planning two surprise birthdays. Both my mom and DH hit milestones this year.

GRACEN: While April 22nd marks Earth Day, June 5th is World Environment Day. What will you do to celebrate our environment?

AMBER: Celebrate? Nothing. I do my best to recycle and be conscious of the environment every day of the year.

GRACEN: Speaking of the environment, do you strive to be more energy efficient or more environmentally conscious? How you accomplish this goal?

AMBER: Yes, the DH has replaced all the light bulbs in the house. We recycle everything possible. He unplugs everything not in use.

GRACEN: What traits make the men in your life good father figures? Will you do anything special to celebrate these men? If so, what will it be?

AMBER: Sadly I won’t be able to spend Father’s Day with my Dad, but we’ll talk and I’ll send him something special. Instead I’ll have a cookout at our house for my father-in-law and DH.

GRACEN: While the summer solstice occurs on June 21st, warmer weather usually arrives earlier than that, encouraging people to get out and enjoy the weather. What activities do you usually start in June?

AMBER: I love June for so many reasons. Our pool is open and the weather has been warm enough to use it. I love hanging out on my deck and enjoying the sun. I’ve made a few trips to the ocean already. There’s a lighthouse we go to and sit by the ocean watching the boats sail by. Listening to the waves coming in is so peaceful.

GRACEN: While people generally clean in spring, they need to do something with all the stuff the find they do not need. If it isn’t given away or donated, many people have rummage or estate sales. What about you, do you like to hit the rummage sales on a nice warm morning? Do you go alone or with someone else? Is it a family tradition?

AMBER: Our family does an annual rummage sale in late June. The only problem is I have to lug all my stuff three hours to my Aunt’s house to participate!

GRACEN: In many areas, private community schools tend to schedule festivals and bazaars as fundraisers throughout the summer. What about your area? What kind of festivals and bazaars can be found and when will they occur? Do you make appearances at them, or do you avoid them? If so, why?

AMBER: I like the local bazaars. I’m all about helping them out. The only thing that scares me is the rides. They put them together and take them apart so much I can’t imagine them being safe.

GRACEN: The weather in June seems to be a great mix in almost every state, and most people tend to plan vacations in June. What about you, are you a June traveler? If so, where will you be going? If not, when do you prefer to travel and why? Where have you gone or will you be going this year?

AMBER: June is a vacation month for us. We are planning a trip to Denver to see the Red Sox play. We are huge fans and are excited to be able to see them in a different park.

GRACEN: We’ve had our fun now, so let’s put the focus on your writing. While there are many genres to choose from, what specifically brought you to romance? Why this genre over the others?

AMBER: As a child I loved fairy tales. I’m all about happily-ever-after.

GRACEN: Even though the popularity of the romance genre continues to grow, it’s still not always a highly respected genre. What, in your opinion, is the reason for the continued interest in the genre and for the lack of respect it receives?

AMBER: The continued interest in my opinion is women want to believe in love and HEA. They want to fantasize about the possibility of being with one of the heroes in the romance books.

GRACEN: Earlier, we asked about what traits make the men in your life good father figures. Now, we want to know, have any of these men, or their traits, been inspiration for characters in your stories? If so, which men, what characters and/or traits and why?

AMBER: Nope, none of them have shown up in my characters. Not yet anyway.

GRACEN: For a writer, inspiration can be found everywhere and in almost anyone, but sometimes specific people, places and events can inspire certain characters, personality traits, events or situations that happen in our stories. In your current story that we’re promoting here today, Pretend With Me, did any one particular person, place or event inspire you? If so who/what was it (were they), how did it/they inspire you and how is this inspiration reflected in your story?

AMBER: A mansion in Newport RI was the inspiration behind the BDSM club in this story. Pretend With Me is the first in the Freedom Fantasies Series. As I walked around the mansion looking at the numerous rooms I envisioned different acts that could take place in each.

GRACEN: Without giving away anything pertinent to the story, tell us about the hero and heroine (s) of your story. What do they look like? How do they meet (or “did” if this is not the first book with these same characters)? What are their personalities – Are they comical cut-ups, are they serious or are they a mix of the two? Please give us a little bit of dialogue from the story that can illustrate this.

AMBER: They’re husband and wife. Paige has red hair, blue eyes. Jed has blond hair, brown eyes and a goatee. They’re definitely a mixture. Paige is a spitfire at times. “I want a divorce,” Paige declared. She slid her hoop earrings on for another day at the office.
“What?” She could see Jed’s look of shock from the mirror, but she didn’t care. She was tired of their non-sexual marriage.
“You heard me. I want a divorce.”
“I don’t understand.” He stopped adjusting his tie and walked over to her.
She turned and looked at him pointedly. “I’m tired of being second best in my own house. I’m tired of not having my husband!” As her voice grew louder Jed tried to hush her.
“Paige, he’ll hear you. Can’t you please keep it down?”
“I don’t give a rat’s ass who hears me! I’m tired of playing second fiddle to him. So I hope he hears me. I want a divorce because of him.”

GRACEN: The main characters are usually great, but sometimes, secondary and tertiary characters are known to steal the scenes, even if the author did not intend this to happen. Who are the secondary/tertiary characters in your story and what do they look like? What’s unique about them? What is their relationship to the hero/heroine? Have any of these characters gone on to become scene-stealers? If so, who and how did they do it? Is there the possibility for them to get their own story? (Again, please give us a small bit of dialogue to illustrate this – thanks!)

AMBER: Tommy is a secondary character. He’s Jed’s best friend and plays a part in their marriage falling apart. He also helps put it back together. Tommy’s not really a scene stealer, but he will be getting his own story in the future. He deserves a HEA.
“I never meant to cause any trouble. I just needed to be around friends. It hasn’t been an easy time. In all honesty, I didn’t want to go on without Felicia.”
His confession rocked her to the core. She hadn’t realized the extent of his pain.
“Tommy, she isn’t worth ending your life. If you did she’d win.”

Interested in reading more? Then check out the following excerpt:
Pretend With MeBLURB: After threatening divorce, Paige gives up her fantasy of hot sex with two men, especially when Tommy, the other man she wants to have sex with, is the reason for her divorce threats. When Paige confesses she’s considering leaving Jed to her best friend and owner of Freedom Fantasies sex club, life takes an unexpected turn. Paige finds herself pretending she’s having a hot, sordid affair.

Paige appreciates all the pleasures she’s unable to find at home. Being spanked in the corner, tied to the bed or getting it on in the shower, Paige experiences more orgasms than she thought possible. To heighten the excitement, her pretend lover brings in a friend…

EXCERPT: “What’s wrong?” Tommy asked, coming into the living room.
“Oh nothing.” The last thing she wanted to do was discuss it with Tommy.
“Okay. Well, I’m going out for a pizza. I’ll be back later.”
Her stomach growled. “Hold on, Tommy.”
He came back into the living room. “What’s up?”
“Do you mind if I tag along? Jed has to work late and I’m starved.” She’d barely touched her salad at lunch. She was more engrossed in the sex she was having with Jed, or should she say Stone, to worry about eating.
“I’d love you to join me.”
She put her work aside and followed Tommy out the door. They walked down the street to the pizza parlor. The night air was crisp but felt good. It’d been so long since she’d taken a walk and enjoyed the night air.
“It’s a beautiful night,” Tommy said. His steps were lazy and Paige followed his lead.
She wasn’t in a hurry to rush back to her empty house, the place where her husband barely lived anymore. The sad part was Tommy was partially to blame for her husband’s disappearance all the time. When he wasn’t working late he was out gallivanting with Tommy.
“Jed doesn’t want a divorce,” Tommy said, breaking the silence.
“Neither do I,” she admitted. Yes, she was angry with him, but deep down she didn’t want to divorce her husband. She’d only threatened to so she would get his attention. She’d managed to grab it, but only momentarily.
“He loves you more than anything.”
“Ha!”
“What’s so funny?” He stopped, grabbing hold of her arm.
“He’s in love with you too. Not in a sexual way, but come on, Tommy. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed how he’s torn between his loyalties to both of us.”

SUPERNATURAL SUNDAY

From Myrddin’s Point of View

Some people need a gentle push. Some people need a hard poke or two. While others, well, they need a good kick in the arse. I know that may come off sounding a bit harsh, but I am a tough love kind of fellow. There is only so much leeway I will allow my loved ones to take before I intervene. After all, my charges do need to make mistakes and try to find their way in life on their own. But, if they continue to flounder and not get on the right path, you can be sure I will be there to re-direct them.

Granted, due to my stature and physical nature, I can not kick anyone in the bum in the literal sense, but I can get under their feet. And the lovely ladies I live with know that all too well. I am a lucky guy to have such wonderful women in my life to love and be loved by. But, alas, I can not fill all of their needs.

I found my first charge, my Wiccan practicing mistress Cassandra, when she was at a low point in her teenage years. The night I walked out of the forest and into her company was kismet. We had an immediate connection and have been together ever since. I have seen her through college, a fast marriage, an even quicker divorce and a move to her current home. I know it’s almost time for me to bring Cassandra’s true love to her, but hers is a story for a latter time.

My current available tale concerns a ghost in our house by the name of Quinn who is yearning for his ideal woman. Aunt Mae, Cassandra and I are tiring of his lamentations. He continues to believe he is living in his time period, which, if I understand him correctly, is during the latter half of the Victorian era. I need to bring him forward to help him understand what happened to him all those years ago and match him with his woman whom he has waited for long enough. Who am I and how might I do this, you ask?

I am my psychic mistress’s feline familiar, Myrddin. I am a handsome black cat, if I do say so myself, with long silky hair, fluffy tail and piercing yellow green eyes. And, due to my connection with my mistress, I can make suggestions which she is usually wise enough to follow. Through her I can engage others to assist me.

The other day I had caught Auntie Mae and Cassandra looking at recent photos of two girls—Cassandra’s cousin, Julie, and Julie’s friend, Evelyn. One of the pictures had fluttered to the floor and I studied it. Evelyn and Julie seemed to be enjoying themselves at a function at their college in Texas. But more than that, not only did Evelyn fit the description of Quinn’s ideal woman, my sixth sense told me she had been slipping into the past in her dreams and spending time with him. Evelyn’s dreams have been a bit too real and she needs a wake-up call. So, I have told my mistress to invite Julie and her friend up to Raritan Manor here in New Jersey for a visit. And, if my cunning but extreme tactics to bring two lovers together go as planned, all will work out fine.

Myrddin would like to present the first book ~

Blurb:

A woman in love. A ghost in need. A man possessed. Myrddin, Cassandra’s frisky feline familiar, has his work cut out to get two lovers together. Evelyn is in love with Raritan Manor’s resident ghost, Quinn, but can only experience his embrace in her dreams. Quinn, who doesn’t realize he’s a ghost, loves Eve and wishes she’d stop saying they can’t be together. While at the manor, her friend, Julie, is prompted by Cassandra and Myrddin to invite their cousin, Alex, for a visit. When Alex arrives, Evelyn’s hopes rise. Perhaps she will be able to have a real relationship after all. Alex, though, has no interest in Evelyn. Yet, every time Myrddin comes around Alex feels like a man possessed and wants Eve with a passion, but the moment the cat leaves he’s back to his old self again. Caught between loving a ghost and putting up with a man who can’t make up his mind, Evelyn is at a loss of what to do and feels as if she’s losing her mind. Can Myrddin get the right people together without causing too much heartache in the process?

Excerpt:

He looked at her, his gaze traveling over her face, searching her eyes. Then, he crushed her to him and pressed his lips on hers. Hypnotized by his kiss, she matched his eagerness with her own. His hands did a hungry search of her body. Warm passion rose in her and her thoughts fragmented. When his hand molded around her breast, a sense of caution clicked in her mind. She pulled away.

His broad shoulders heaved with every breath. “What is it, love? What is wrong?”

“Quinn, we can’t keep doing this,” her voice, faint and breathless, hitched on the words.

“Why not, sweetlin’?”

She rose from the couch and smoothed her palms along her shorts while gaining her composure. “Because, I told you, you’re not real. You’re a man who haunts my dreams and my friend’s aunt’s house.”

Quinn’s face darkened, his eyes narrowed. He stood and grasped her shoulders. “I wish you would stop this nonsense talk. You are not dreaming and I am real. The other day I thought I showed you—”

Evelyn put a finger up to his lips. “We had a wonderful experience, but it can’t happen again. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.”

“Then why?”

“There’s someone else,” she lied.

Sadness melted Quinn’s gaze. “Do you love him?”

Evelyn breathed with exasperation. “No, I don’t.” She paused, then added another lie, “Not yet at least.”

Quinn took her in his arms. “Good. I do not know if I could handle you being in love with another man.” He placed a kiss on her cheek, then nibbled her neck.

Her harnessed control broke free. Excitement drilled a hole in her center and desire twisted in its wake. Her mind spun in turmoil. She wanted him, but what would forging a bond with a ghost do to her psyche? A relationship like that would eventually drive her insane.

Starlight Saturday

Twyla is jaded and doesn’t trust any man. Her friend, Anna, calls her, a “Scrooge of Valentine’s Day”. But Twyla has reasons to be jaded…or she thinks she does. Finding a pair of thongs in her fiancé’s car just before their wedding would make anyone jaded. But a few ghosts decide to drop in on Twyla and stir some things up…and maybe, just maybe show her the error of her ways.

This is a charming sweet story about giving second chances to Mr. Right. It will speak to the romantic in each of us and it’s a delightful read for all ages. Through the good writing, it’s easy to empathize with Twyla’s heartache. From the moment I started reading Ghosts of Valentine’s Past, I saw Twyla as a person that had been deeply hurt and in order to protect her heart from further pain, she’s shut herself off from any possible future hurt by writing off all men. Twyla’s first ghostly visit is her chain smoking Aunt Polly. Aunt Polly is a hoot and I loved her. Through the ghostly visits, Twyla realizes that her choices have not only impacted her future, but that of Shane’s as well. And she realizes that sometimes the truth isn’t as clear cut as we may believe it to be.

PHANTASM FRIDAY

PEN NAMES...

Pen names seem to be used in the writing industry as often as real names are. There are some valid reasons for pen names. Maybe your pen name is snazzier than your real name? Others use different pen names depending upon their genre.

Using an alias can be liberating too. I can let loose and give free reign to my wild side, write wicked things and none of my family and friends know it’s me so they can’t judge. This is the main reason I chose to use a pen name. I live in what’s referred to as the Bible Belt and the things I write aren’t biblically approved. At all. Heck, I have family that believes I’m going to hell for writing about vampires…forget the sex, just the vampire writing is getting me a one-way direct ticket to the pit. *rolls eyes* But, even though I don’t have a problem with folks knowing what I write, I didn’t think it fair to subject my children to the scrutiny and judgment they’d receive if certain judgmental people learned what I write. Keeping my pen name a deep dark secret is becoming more difficult, however, thanks to my eldest son. He tells everyone that’ll listen that I’m an author. He even told his principal I was a published author. At least I know he’s proud of me.

The alias Gracen Miller gives me anonymity also and none of the psychos can track me down and stalk me as easily either. Right? LOL Yeah, that might be a tad drastic, especially since a good hacker could probably still find me. But I admit I’ve met a couple of folks on the internet that make me really, really, really happy that I decided to use a pen name. I feel safer knowing that only a trusted few know my true identity. There are some crazy folks out there!

So, do you use a pen name? Why or why not? What was your reason for using one?

I’ll blog about our cruise next Friday! I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Twilight Thursday

Welcome Author
Kelly Heckart

Kelly Heckart
!!!

June Holidays/Special Days: 1st – Atlantic Hurricane Season; 5th – World Environment Day; 14th – Flag Day; 19th – Juneteenth Day (Freedom/Emancipation Day); 20th – Father’s Day, 21st – Summer Solstice; 24th – St. Baptiste Day; 27th – Helen Keller Day;

GRACEN: When you stop to consider trends and traditions, June marks a time of beginnings (marriages, commencements). What about you, any weddings, anniversaries or graduations to attend this month?

KELLY: Hi Gracen, thanks for having me as a guest on your blog. No, I have nothing planned for June that involves romantic unions, celebrations or graduations of any kind. No new beginnings for me, I guess. It's just the same old stuff. I did just start a new job as an editor for an e-pub. I guess that counts as a new beginning. Not as fun, though, as a wedding or other celebration. Oh, well.

GRACEN: While April 22nd marks Earth Day, June 5th is World Environment Day. What will you do to celebrate our environment?

KELLY: I am aware of Earth Day but World Environment Day is new to me. I always appreciate my environment so I celebrate every day. We have the most beautiful lake and mountains here and I hope they stay that way.

GRACEN: Speaking of the environment, do you strive to be more energy efficient or more environmentally conscious? How you accomplish this goal?

KELLY: I am more aware of being energy efficient now, probably because it's so expensive. We use the light bulbs that last longer and use less energy, and we recycle our aluminum cans.

GRACEN: What traits make the men in your life good father figures? Will you do anything special to celebrate these men? If so, what will it be?

KELLY: My father has always been there when I needed him. He's been a great dad. We always have a family gathering to celebrate Father's Day.

GRACEN: While the summer solstice occurs on June 21st, warmer weather usually arrives earlier than that, encouraging people to get out and enjoy the weather. What activities do you usually start in June?

KELLY: Well, June here in the desert is the time to either stay inside the air-conditioned house or submerge yourself in a pool or the lake. June is when we start to have 100 plus degree weather. We Desert Rats get outside and enjoy the nice weather in the winter or spring—not summer.

GRACEN: While people generally clean in spring, they need to do something with all the stuff they find they do not need. If it isn’t given away or donated, many people have rummage or estate sales. What about you, do you like to hit the rummage sales on a nice warm morning? Do you go alone or with someone else? Is it a family tradition?

KELLY: I'm the one that needs to have a garage sale. My husband is afraid I'm going to turn into a hoarder and made me watch the television special about hoarders. The show kind of freaked me out because it said that potential hoarders have OCD and bad social skills. When this was mentioned in the show, my husband and I looked at each other and laughed because I do have a little bit of OCD and I spend most of my time by myself writing. I don't have that much stuff, really, but I could get rid of a lot of stuff I haven't used in years. I'm thinking after seeing that special, maybe cleaning out my stuff is a good idea.

GRACEN: In many areas, private community schools tend to schedule festivals and bazaars as fundraisers throughout the summer. What about your area? What kind of festivals and bazaars can be found and when will they occur? Do you make appearances at them, or do you avoid them? If so, why?

KELLY: We do have festivals like the Winter Fest, but in the summer, this town is all about boating and the lake—it's all bikinis and beer. I have attended some Celtic festivals in the past in the fall and spring in California and Tucson, AZ.

GRACEN: The weather in June seems to be a great mix in almost every state, and most people tend to plan vacations in June. What about you, are you a June traveler? If so, where will you be going? If not, when do you prefer to travel and why? Where have you gone or will you be going this year?

KELLY: June is the perfect time to get away from here and the summer heat. We don't have anything planned, but sometimes we go to Flagstaff, AZ for the weekend. It's beautiful and much cooler up there in the mountains.

GRACEN: We’ve had our fun now, so let’s put the focus on your writing. While there are many genres to choose from, what specifically brought you to romance? Why this genre over the others?

KELLY: I started writing romance because it's the most popular genre with readers. Once I started writing it, I realized that I liked it because romance is an important part of life and makes for a lot of angst and conflict in stories. To make my romances more appealing to me as a writer (and hopefully appealing to readers), I cross over into paranormal, historical and fantasy.

GRACEN: Even though the popularity of the romance genre continues to grow, it’s still not always a highly respected genre. What, in your opinion, is the reason for the continued interest in the genre and for the lack of respect it receives?

KELLY: I think some critics feel that romance is all fluff and no substance. This is true of some romance books, but not all. Women continue to read romance because they are drawn to that happily ever after ending that doesn't exist in real life. Romance is an escape from the harsh realities of our complicated lives.

GRACEN: Earlier, we asked about what traits make the men in your life good father figures. Now, we want to know, have any of these men, or their traits, been inspiration for characters in your stories? If so, which men, what characters and/or traits and why?

KELLY: The heroes in my stories tend to be ancient/medieval warriors so they aren't based on any one I know, but they do have some of the traits from men I have known or still know. The majority of my heroes are based on literary warriors like King Arthur, warriors in the Iliad or warriors from Irish myths.

GRACEN: For a writer, inspiration can be found everywhere and in almost anyone, but sometimes specific people, places and events can inspire certain characters, personality traits, events or situations that happen in our stories. In your current story that we’re promoting here today, Cat's Curse, did any one particular person, place or event inspire you? If so who/what was it (were they), how did it/they inspire you and how is this inspiration reflected in your story?

KELLY: The hero in Cat's Curse is based on an actual sixth century Irish warlord who was known as one of the most feared king's of his time. I came across him while researching the Picts. He is mentioned in a book called In Search of the Picts as having a shadowy past and may have fathered a king of the Picts. This intrigued me and I decided to make him my hero and imagined what kind of woman would win his heart. He was called 'Aedan, the Treacherous' in the Welsh poems. This posed a challenge for me because somehow I had to turn this fearsome warlord into a likable hero. After giving it some thought, I realized that his enemies would say negative things about him, and to the outside world, he would have to be tough to be a successful king in that time period, but in private to the woman he loves, he would show a more tender side.

(Not much, but just a few lines and from a different section than the main excerpt – Thanks!)

KELLY: In Cat's Curse, my hero (Aedan) is a tall, strapping Celtic prince and living in exile deep in the highland forest. My heroine (Cardea) is a petite woman with raven black hair and blue-green eyes. She is an ancient Greek vampire who can't remember how she arrived on Alba (Scotland). They meet when Aedan is trying to light a fire. She is compelled to help him even though his attitude is arrogant toward her. I will post that excerpt, but here is some dialog showing that she is a bit bold while he can be kind of grumpy.

Aedan hurried out of the water and froze at the sound of female laughter echoing in the clearing. He looked down and his clothes were still three steps away from him.
“It is a bit cold, is it not?” The lass he'd met last night flashed him a wicked smile, staring boldly at him. She stood a few feet away in the shadow of the great trees.
“Have ye nae shame, lass?” ‘God’s teeth, she is a beauty,’ he thought, blushing.
“No, I suppose not.” She turned away as he dressed.
“What do ye want now?” he muttered, yanking his clothes on.
“Are you always in such a foul mood?”
“Only when a woman dares to laugh at me,” he scowled at her back.

KELLY: There is a character in Cat's Curse that I really took a liking to the more I wrote about him and thought he could steal the scenes. His name is Galan (he is based on an actual Pict king). Galan is Aedan's nemesis and complete opposite in looks and personality. While Aedan is tall and strapping, Galan is tall and lean like a wildcat. A Pict, he is covered in tattoos and has the exotic looks of a wildcat. I found myself taken with his dangerous looks and unpredictability. He is also in Beltaine's Song, which is the second book of my Dark Goddess trilogy (available soon from Awe-Struck), and plays an important part in the plot. Here is some dialog to show how adventurous he is:

Galan came to her drying her with a soft cloth. “Your skin is so soft,” he whispered. He pulled her into his arms. “Will you bite me again?”
“Do you want me to, my lord?” She touched the healed puncture marks on his neck. “I did not kill you.”
“I know that if you wanted to kill me, they would be burying me right now.” He gazed at her with a glimmer of affection and trust. “The biting…it was a strange feeling, almost pleasurable.”

EXCERPT:
The man started at her sudden words, turning toward her with the sword blade stopping just before the blade cut into Cardea's neck, the coldness of the iron striking a shudder in her. That was the second time in one night she almost lost her head to his sword blade.

“Why are ye following me?” Irritation filled his voice.

“You look like you need some help starting that fire.”

“I do not need yer help.” He stared at her. His brows knitted together, his eyes scrutinizing her. “A good Christian lass would not be out here all alone in the forest at night,” he remarked with a sneer.

Cardea’s mocking laughter filled the air.

“Do I amuse ye?” He peered at her, eyes narrowed in annoyance.

She found her courage again. “You presume much of me, but what about you? I can only imagine what dreadful act you committed to be banished into these dark-winged woods. Though I can assume your misdeeds had nothing to do with fire,” she smirked, crossing her arms and planting her feet firm to the ground.

“Ye lass, are a rude minion of the Devil himself.” His handsome face rippled with indignation.

“That I may be indeed.” She stared hard at him. His ranting recalled images of the hated Levite priests. A shudder tore through her body and rage fumed inside of her, threatening to rise. She flirted with the temptation to rip his neck open and drink him dry. No one would find his rotting corpse out this far in the forest. The beasts would clean the bones of all flesh. She did not understand why she held back, but her hesitation had something to do with the odd way this man stirred her senses.

He turned around and strode with great arrogance back to his fire pit, striking the blade with the flint rock in angry thrusts. After watching him for a few moments, she approached him.

“Do ye have more insults for me?”

“No. I just cannot stand to watch you make a mockery of fire starting.”

“I can start the fire,” he insisted, turning back to the fire pit.

She watched him struggle again with the stone and blade, trying not to laugh.

“Please, allow me to assist you. It is much too cold tonight to be without a warm fire.” She did not understand why she felt compelled to help him and reached for the dagger she carried on her belt. His cold blade touched her throat before she could blink. Three times now his blade touched her throat and she wondered if it were a portent. “I need my dagger to start your fire.”

He eyed her with suspicion, but withdrew his blade from her throat.

“Ye live alone?” he asked, giving her room to start the fire, but he did not sheath his sword.

“Yes.” She noticed how he bit back a derisive retort.

Cardea held the stone with the sharp edge facing the blade and struck the blade in one swift movement. A spark shot out and the dry peat began to smolder. She struck the blade one more time and a flame rose from the peat, sending out warmth.

“You have to strike the blade in one swift movement with the stone to create a spark. Rubbing it like you were doing only wears the stone down. And it is best to strike the blade with the sharpest edge of the stone.”

“I have a capable pair of eyes. I saw how ye did it.” The bitter tone of his voice revealed his irritation toward her.

“I did not intend to offend you.”

“Good night to ye.” He waited for her to leave the fire before sheathing his sword. Keeping his eyes on her, he stoked the flames.

She stepped toward him and he jumped up, moving away from her. “Do not touch me.” His eyes turned an angry shade of dark blue and an aura of torment surrounded him. “I wish to be left alone.”

Cardea bristled at his surliness, thinking him to be the most arrogant man she'd ever met. “I will take my leave of you now, but you are in my territory so I imagine we will see one another again whether you approve of it or not.” Fuming, she stomped away before he could respond to her announcement. She had even lost the desire to drink his blood. His behavior puzzled her for no man could resist her legendary beauty and charms, but she had noticed a small glimmer of desire in his eyes, leaving her awash in bittersweet feelings.

She wondered why she could not touch him and why he was filled with so much torment and rage. Such a man excited her because of the mystery shrouding his spirit. For once in her long life, she stayed away from a choice bite. Cardea crept through the forest, hunting, but could not take her mind off of the strange, handsome man.

Wistful Wednesday

Hey, this was supposed to post last Wednesday, but I don't think it showed up, so I'm trying it again!

Revision: How Do I Make
This Better?

I thought I’d do something a little differently today. I thought I’d show you a little glimpse into the process of revision. Below is the latest of many incantations for the opening of a YA novel I’ve been working on for some time. But, like all of the openings before it, it just lacked the punch I was looking for. After weeks of trying to come up with a better opening, I submitted this portion of the opening to an online contest for the feedback and in so doing, had a breakthrough. I finally came up with something that I think packs the punch I was looking for, as well as conveying the information I wanted to convey in this section. Following this version is the new version. I invite you to read both and tell me what you think. Which one does the better job of conveying the information? Or do I still need to work on it? All suggestions are welcome.

Version #1:

I don’t ask for a lot. Really. In my family, there’s not much to ask for, anyway. I guess you could say that demand out-weighs supply. But even if there was anything to ask for, I wouldn’t. It’s just not me. I’m kind of happy with what I’ve got so why ask for more when I don’t need it? Still, it would be nice if, just once, I could ask for this: To get through the day without someone making fun of my name.
Just once.
Please?
No, of course not. That never seems to be the case. Inevitably, someone, some time, is struck by the urge to make fun of my name. And how could they resist? With an unfortunate moniker like Irene Goode, they have a lot to work with.
Yes, that’s right.
Irene.
Goode.
That’s me. A born punchline for all the budding comedians of Amory High. Or wanna-be mean girls.
Today, it was Bridget Taylor stepping up to the mike for her shot at school fame. And me. One thing about Bridget: She lacks imagination. So rather than dazzling her classmates with her stunning wit, she fell short with a dull pun. A variation of which she’d been slinging at me since our first encounter in grade school.
“Can you pass this to the Goode girl?”

Version #2:

I always knew my name would get me into trouble one day. Seriously, with a name like Irene Goode, the probability for trouble ranked pretty high, if you know what I mean. Well, I guess Irene’s not too bad – unless you’re like a certain someone who shall remain nameless (Bridget Taylor), who once told me, “We had a cow named Irene once. We ate it for dinner.” Seriously twisted. Even in grade school. Yeah, so tell me something like that and you make an issue out of the first name. But most of the time, it’s not so bad. Not great. But not bad. Oh, no. The problem is the last name.
Goode.
Do you know how hard it is to live up to a name like that?
I do.

Or how about Version #3, which adds more detail:

I always knew my name would get me into trouble one day. I just didn’t think it would take this long. Maybe I just have a long fuse. Or a short attention span. Something. But, anyway. It finally happened. I snapped. And my name got me in trouble.
Seriously, with a name like Irene Goode, the probability ranked pretty high, if you know what I mean. Well, I guess Irene’s not too bad – unless you’re like a certain someone who shall remain nameless (Bridget Taylor), who once told me, “We had a cow named Irene once. We ate it for dinner.”
But she was one twisted sister. I mean seriously twisted. Even in grade school. Who would name something and then eat it? Or even say they did? That’s a demented thing for anyone to say, but really disturbing coming from a seven-year old.
Yeah, so tell me something like that and you make an issue out of the first name. But most of the time, it’s not so bad. Not great. (Like Maxie or Roxie, my idols!) But not bad. Oh, no. The problem is the last name.
Goode.
Do you know how hard it is to live up to a name like that?
I do.

So what do you think? Which version do you like better? And do you have any revision tips for other aspiring writers out there?

Tantalizing Tuesday

Please welcome a fabulous author and a dear friend, Rie McGaha, into the moonlight. Rie's newest book, Ancient Blood, was released yesterday, Monday, May 31st, and is the sequel to Blood Line, both released by Noble Romance Publishing. Other books written by Rie include, Cocked and Fully Loaded, Deadly Dreams, Grounded, My Soul to Keep, One Good Man, Two for Hire and Ghosts of Valentine's Past (a review will be posted here on June 5th for Ghosts of Valentine's Past). Rie has over 20 grandchildren, is a dog lover, even finds time to rescue them, while carving out more time to free lance edit, produce fantastic book trailers, manage a promotions business and be a review editor for The Pagan & The Pen. She's involved with several blogs and I'm sure she'd love for you to visit them all:

Now, let's get to the good stuff...

GRACEN: When you stop to consider trends and traditions, June marks a time of beginnings (marriages, commencements). What about you, any weddings, anniversaries or graduations to attend this month?

RIE: Not this year, but next year my oldest grandson will graduate from high school.

GRACEN: While April 22nd marks Earth Day, June 5th is World Environment Day. What will you do to celebrate our environment?

RIE: I am big on garbage. I don’t just wait for certain dates on the calendar, whenever I see garbage on the roads around here, I stop and clean it up.

GRACEN: Speaking of the environment, do you strive to be more energy efficient or more environmentally conscious? How you accomplish this goal?

RIE: We are environmentally conscious, although it’s a way of life for us and not some bandwagon we’ve jumped on. We live in a very remote area and have solar power, bio toilets that turn human waste into compost for the garden, we compost instead of throwing stuff away, grow most of our own food, and don’t run to town for every little thing. Instead, we wait and go once a month or less.

GRACEN: What traits make the men in your life good father figures? Will you do anything special to celebrate these men? If so, what will it be?

RIE: My husband is a great father. He married me with 5 kids in tow, and had never been around children. He accepted them as his own and even though there were some of the normal problems for a man coming into the lives of pre-teens and teens, he was willing to deal with whatever happened. He’s always treated the kids as if they were his own and they all refer to him as their “dad” not step-dad. This year is going to be a really great Father’s Day because he is turning 50 and retiring, all about the same time as Father’s Day. The kids are all coming home with their kids and we’re having a family BBQ, going to the lake, taking the boat out, going for a motorcycle ride, and he is planning on taking the grandkids for a campout.

GRACEN: While the summer solstice occurs on June 21st, warmer weather usually arrives earlier than that, encouraging people to get out and enjoy the weather. What activities do you usually start in June?

RIE: Getting the motorcycle out and going riding. And this year is awesome because we will be touring the wineries of Oklahoma for my contribution to William Maltese’s Wine Diaries.

RIE: I’m not big on rummage sales. Sometimes, if I happen to be out and see something that might be interesting, I’ll stop but in general, I don’t go looking for yard sales.

GRACEN: In many areas, private community schools tend to schedule festivals and bazaars as fundraisers throughout the summer. What about your area? What kind of festivals and bazaars can be found and when will they occur? Do you make appearances at them, or do you avoid them? If so, why?

RIE: We live in a very small community and schools rule around here with the ball games, fund raisers, etc all school year but in the summer we have the town home coming and the streets are blocked off. There’s a street dance, BBQ, arts and crafts booths, and a lot of things for the kids to do, like water balloon fights, and other activities to stay cool. We also have rodeos on the weekends, huge 4th of July picnic/bbq and fireworks. This is a very close knit area and everyone goes to everything!

GRACEN: The weather in June seems to be a great mix in almost every state, and most people tend to plan vacations in June. What about you, are you a June traveler? If so, where will you be going? If not, when do you prefer to travel and why? Where have you gone or will you be going this year?

RIE: As I said, this year June is booked, and in July we will be heading to Calif. to pick up three grandsons and bring them back to Oklahoma for a couple of weeks. While in Calif. we’ll visit more of, our kids and grandkids and then take the long way home stopping at some of the water parks and other places for the grandsons to cool off.

GRACEN: We’ve had our fun now, so let’s put the focus on your writing, Rie…While there are many genres to choose from, what specifically brought you to romance? Why this genre over the others?

RIE: I used to read a lot of romances by authors like Karen Marie Moning, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and many others, so that was a genre I was familiar with. When I decided to start writing for publication, I went with what I knew the best. This is not my favorite genre though, I really prefer writing non-romance in the suspense or paranormal genres.

GRACEN: Even though the popularity of the romance genre continues to grow, it’s still not always a highly respected genre. What, in your opinion, is the reason for the continued interest in the genre and for the lack of respect it receives?

RIE: I think the romance genre has actually gained a lot of momentum in both popularity and respect lately. I have seen several men reading Nora Roberts’ books while waiting in line or at the airports!

GRACEN: Earlier, we asked about what traits make the men in your life good father figures. Now, we want to know, have any of these men, or their traits, been inspiration for characters in your stories? If so, which men, what characters and/or traits and why?

RIE: Absolutely. My husband Nathan is my biggest fan and a lot of what I write in the hero comes from what I know about him. I always tell him he’s a really bad boy, but such a good man. To me, that’s a very attractive quality. To find a man who is still the little boy who likes to play, but the very protective man who will slay the dragons is my ideal man. I found him in my husband.

GRACEN: For a writer, inspiration can be found everywhere and in almost anyone, but sometimes specific people, places and events can inspire certain characters, personality traits, events or situations that happen in our stories. In your current story that we’re promoting here today, Ancient Blood, did any one particular person, place or event inspire you? If so who/what was it (were they), how did it/they inspire you and how is this inspiration reflected in your story?

RIE: Not so much in Ancient Blood. This is the sequel to Blood Line and the men were established in that story, so it’s just a matter of carrying the story line on into the sequel. However, in Comes An Outlaw (coming soon) the hero is based on a very dear friend I have known for nearly thirty years, so it really just depends on the story.

(Not much, but just a few lines and from a different section than the main excerpt – Thanks!)

RIE: I tend to use my youngest son’s looks for my heroes. Cody is a United States Marine, with black hair, the bluest eyes and is just gorgeous, so it’s easy to describe him as the heroines lost love, Colin. Colin is described as being a bookworm, with the desire to travel and has a love of learning. Ganda is the heroine in this story and her looks are actually based on Catherine Zeta-Jones, who I think is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. Ganda is smart, loving, kind, but ruffle her feathers and she’s a bitch you don’t even want to mess with.

RIE: Since this is the sequel to Blood Line where Josh and Jessie Kaine were the main characters, both are now secondary characters. They are young, in love, married right out of high school, and really enjoy throwing verbal jabs at one another. This is really insight into my relationship with my husband!

Excerpt:

Josh shined his flashlight up the stairs and called out to Jessie and Ganda. “Come on down and bring the equipment!”

Jessie looked at Ganda and rolled her eyes, as she hoisted her pack onto her back and grabbed Josh’s as well. “You’d think they were leading an expedition,” she said as she started down the stairs. Ganda chuckled as she followed.

“I heard that,” Josh said with a wry grin as Jessie descended the stairwell and joined him and Garan in the dark space below.

“I meant for you too,” Jess said with a laugh.

Ganda shined the beam of her flashlight around and found they were in a small room approximately twelve by twelve feet square. The walls were etched with carvings and paintings that had to date back at least four thousand years, perhaps longer. As they each took a wall to examine them for doorways and clues, Ganda found another painting that closely resembled the original on the Colonnade floor above them.

“Garan,” she said softly. “Look at this one.”

Garan examined the wall closely and walked slowly down its length following the designs. “I think this is a warning,” he said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything like this, but as I recall, it says something like “beware the night, beware the beast of the night, beware the . . . hmmm, I’m not sure on this last part but it looks like blood, or feeding on blood or something like that.”

“Beware the beast who feeds on the blood of man. Beware the beast who consumes the flesh of man. Beware,” Ganda said as she followed Garan along the wall.

“Sounds like someone had a run in with a werewolf,” Jessie said.

“Or that a werewolf lies behind this wall and someone put this warning here to keep anyone from trying to free the beast beyond,” Garan said. “Get the sonar.”

“Ganda, are you okay?” Jess asked as the two men set about their task.

“I’m fine. I just felt goose bumps run over my body as I read that. It’s almost as if I can feel Colin.”

“Is he there?”

“I don’t know,” Ganda said with a shrug. “I think I can feel him, but then I wonder if it’s my mind playing tricks on me again. I spent so many years mourning him, I’m afraid to trust my feelings anymore.”

Jessie placed an arm around Ganda’s shoulders and hugged her. “Don’t worry. This is an emotional thing for you. It has to be difficult to deal with.”

“Thank you. I’m fine now.” Ganda inhaled deeply and slowly released the breath. She closed her eyes and placed one hand against the wall. A low hum came from somewhere deep inside of her, barely audible to those around her.

Garan stopped what he was doing and looked at Josh. He placed a finger over his lips and shook his head once from side to side. Josh stilled, as did Jessie and the trio watched as Ganda continued to hum.

Placing her other hand flat against the wall, Ganda began to emanate a glow that began at the top of her head and swirled around her body until it reached her toes. Then the glow swelled and brightened until the others had to shield their eyes from the intensity. Ganda hummed louder and began to chant in a language no one could understand. She began to levitate, rising off the floor a few inches as she hovered in the air. Suddenly, a wind kicked up and Ganda’s hair whipped around her and then just as suddenly, the wind was gone and Ganda stood firmly on the ground.

“Wow,” Jessie muttered.

“Yeah, wow!” Josh agreed.

Garan smiled at both of them. “This would be the first time you actually saw any of Ganda’s power, isn’t it?” Josh and Jessie both nodded mutely. Garan chuckled. “You should see her when she’s angry. Fire falls from the sky.”

EXCERPT:

At precisely seven that evening, Willard knocked on the door. He’d dressed himself in a black suit and tie and combed his wispy strands of black hair over his balding head. His round belly notwithstanding, Willard thought he looked very dapper indeed. Ganda nearly laughed out loud when she saw him. She wasn’t sure what century he’d lived in prior to being made a wolf, but he certainly hadn’t learned a thing about fashion in all the years since.

“Good evening,” Ganda said with a smile as she opened the door for him.

Willard nearly swallowed his tongue when he saw her. She wasn’t just beautiful, she was exquisite and he knew why Amcor had pursued her for so many long years. He knew why any man would risk all that he owned to have her, would give her anything her heart desired if she would cast her attentions his way but for a moment. He took a deep breath and swallowed hard. “Good evening,” he said with some effort.

“You’re very prompt, Willard. Shall we go?” He simply nodded as she picked up her small bag and went to the door.

The restaurant was plushly decorated and dimly lit for romantic effect. They were led to a small table in a dark corner of the room and the maitre` de held the chair while Ganda sat. He lingered just a little longer than necessary while his eyes roamed over her body, and he didn’t even try to disguise the lust that darkened his eyes. Ganda smiled, amused with the man’s reaction and with the thoughts she read from him. She gave him a sly smile. Willard didn’t miss the look on the man’s face either and cleared his throat rather loudly until he had the man’s attention.

“Perhaps we could have a bottle of wine?” Willard gave the man a hard look and the man quickly looked away from Ganda and hurried to bring the wine.

Ganda chuckled softly and said, “I have forgotten how easily the male of the species is swayed by a feminine smile.”

“Any man would be swayed by you, Ganda. You’re a very beautiful woman.”

“Is that why you brought me here, Willard? To wine and dine and seduce me?” Ganda shot him a wicked grin and sat back in her chair as the wine steward opened the bottle Willard ordered and poured a swallow into his wine glass. He swirled the pale liquid, inhaled the aroma, and lifted the glass to his lips. He nodded slightly and the waiter filled Ganda’s glass first, then Willard’s. He set the bottle back into the bucket near the table and bowed curtly before leaving them alone once again.

“No,” Willard continued the conversation, “but if I thought a little wine and dinner would seduce you, believe me, I would give it a try.” He hoped to sound light and not reveal the tightness he was feeling in his loins.

A wolf’s senses are keen, his urges intense; his sense of smell, sense of taste, sense of hearing more keen than any animal. His eyesight so much better than ever as a mere mortal, and his sexual drive was sometimes so powerful as to be overwhelming. Tonight, even as a man, Willard’s wolf senses were raging as he looked at Ganda. She was a feast for the eyes, the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. In fact, she was a feast for all of his senses, as her scent wafted on the air, her voice like music to his ears, and both man and beast desired her with an intensity he’d never before known. His mouth had gone dry and the wine did little to help. He inhaled slowly and deeply, using all of his willpower to control his urges. It helped only minimally.

The waiter took their order, steaks ordered rare for both of them. Ganda regarded Willard carefully, sipped her wine slowly, kept the conversation light, and skirted around the real reason for this dinner. Her expression never changed as she sensed Garan’s arrival. Waiting for a lull in the conversation, she politely excused herself from the table to go to the ladies room.

Willard stood as she rose and she could feel his eyes on her rear as she walked away, so she slowed her pace slightly and swayed her hips a little more than necessary just for effect. Pausing at the hallway, she glanced over her shoulder and shot him a cool smile; he quickly looked away knowing he’d been drooling as he watched her walk away.

Supernatural Sunday

Welcome Author
Rebecca Copeland
Rebecca Leigh!!!

First, I'd like to apologize to everyone for getting this up so late, but better late than never! While Gracen is enjoying a much needed break, I've offered to pick up some of her slack. Unfortunately, my physical maladies had other ideas today. So, again, I apologize for the delay. So, let's just get right to the good stuff, shall we?

While this is really the last day of May, we're kicking off today with our June questions. Hope you enjoy the interview, because we sure had fun coming up with these questions!

ME: There are many holidays within the month of June to celebrate - Holidays/Special Days: 1st – Atlantic Hurricane Season; 5th – World Environment Day; 14th – Flag Day; 19th – Juneteenth Day (Freedom/Emancipation Day); 20th – Father’s Day, 21st – Summer Solstice; 24th – St. Baptiste Day; 27th – Helen Keller Day - and we thought it would be fun to see how different authors celebrate them!

GRACEN: When you stop to consider trends and traditions, June marks a time of beginnings (marriages, commencements). What about you, any weddings, anniversaries or graduations to attend this month?

REBECCA: I always like to commemorate the first day of summer by spending the day outdoors with my family. Since we now live in Hawaii, we are planning a trip to the beach – our favorite place! My youngest daughter was also born on June 29, which makes June a special month.

GRACEN: While April 22nd marks Earth Day, June 5th is World Environment Day. What will you do to celebrate our environment?

REBECCA: There are so many things to do in Hawaii to celebrate the environment. We like to go to the beach, go hiking, and spend time with the wind blowing through our hair at the Pali Lookout – the site of the pivotal battle when King Kamehameha I conquered the island of Oahu.

GRACEN: Speaking of the environment, do you strive to be more energy efficient or more environmentally conscious? How you accomplish this goal?

REBECCA: We try to teach our kids the importance of being environmentally conscious even if it is in only small ways. For example, hanging our laundry to dry and taking a home lunch in reusable containers.

GRACEN: While the summer solstice occurs on June 21st, warmer weather usually arrives earlier than that, encouraging people to get out and enjoy the weather. What activities do you usually start in June?

REBECCA: Actually, we just continue the activities we are able to do all year long in Hawaii. The weather here is perfect for the beach essentially 365 days of the year. Going to the beach is our family’s favorite pastime.

REBECCA: I occasionally got to rummage sales, but I don’t really have an eye for finding those gems. I wish I did – my mother-in-law can find amazing items at rummage sales!! I think it’s a gift I just don’t possess.

GRACEN: The weather in June seems to be a great mix in almost every state, and most people tend to plan vacations in June. What about you, are you a June traveler? If so, where will you be going? If not, when do you prefer to travel and why? Where have you gone or will you be going this year?

REBECCA: As I’ve said, the weather in Hawaii is fabulous. We live in a place that for many people is a vacation get-a-way and we like to take advantage of it!

GRACEN: We’ve had our fun now, so let’s put the focus on your writing. While there are many genres to choose from, what specifically brought you to romance? Why this genre over the others?

REBECCA: I love the idea of having a happily-ever-after story. Maybe it’s the little girl inside me who never grew up, but I think this is one of the most appeal aspects of the romance genre. I actually do write in another genre, but I think my talents are in romance.

GRACEN: Even though the popularity of the romance genre continues to grow, it’s still not always a highly respected genre. What, in your opinion, is the reason for the continued interest in the genre and for the lack of respect it receives?

REBECCA: I’m not really sure the answer to this question. Maybe it is the sort of “in the closet” aspect of reading romance books? Personally, I never shy away from the fact that I like to read romance and that I write romance. I’ve had comments here and there (about the content of my stories), but I ignore them. If what I write bring me pleasure when I write it and pleasure to readers, that is all that matters to me.

GRACEN: For a writer, inspiration can be found everywhere and in almost anyone, but sometimes specific people, places and events can inspire certain characters, personality traits, events or situations that happen in our stories. In your current story that we’re promoting here today, insert name here, did any one particular person, place or event inspire you? If so who/what was it (were they), how did it/they inspire you and how is this inspiration reflected in your story?

REBECCA: There are two inspirations for my debut novel “Have Stake, Will Travel.” The location (the story takes place in Bora Bora, part of French Polynesia) is inspired by my own home here in Hawaii. I am completely in love with the beauty of the South Pacific and my characters very often find themselves here! My main character was inspired by my favorite vampire television series, Buffy – although Orion Masters is more like Faith!

(Not much, but just a few lines and from a different section than the main excerpt – Thanks!)

REBECCA: Orion Masters is a vampire slayer with a corporate sponsor. Julian Hunter is a vampire she meets on her latest gig to Bora Bora. The two meet on the hunt and fall in love.

Have Stake Will TravelBLURB: Orion Masters is no ordinary slayer, she's a dhampir—half vampire—and she uses her superhuman abilities to her advantage.

After all, a girl's gotta make a living.

But her life takes a dramatic u-turn on a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The balmy nights of paradise hold a forbidden temptation. Hot, steamy sex with Julian Hunter.

Like Orion, Julian is a slayer. Unlike Orion, Julian is a pure blood. Their paths cross on the hunt and Orion finds herself unable to control the allure of Julian's seductive powers. Yielding to her body's instinctive, passionate reaction to Julian, she discovers the erotic lure of heritage, shared blood, and destiny.

EXCERPT: I leave right before sunset to return to the gothic lair, but I don't bother to put on either of the sexy dresses I brought with me to the island. The vamps are in the rented house; I sensed their presence. I don't need to lure them away with promises of sex. I'll walk right in and kill them. My jeans and t-shirt will do fine.
I breathe a deep lung full of air before I start the long walk. The salty taste of the tropics fills my mouth. Mmm. Tastes like a good night for slaying.
By the time I reach the vamps' vacation hideout, the sun has already set. I'd hoped to get here quicker, while there was still more light. That would've been the only sure way to know every remaining member of the family would still be inside. Now that the sun has disappeared below the horizon, some or all of the bloodsuckers could already be gone. Searching for their next meal.
Damn.
But tromping through the thick jungle cover of the tropical forest that surrounds the vacant property adjacent to the house took longer than I'd anticipated. I didn't want to walk up the driveway—who knows who may have seen me. I don't need any nosey humans getting in my way. Not tonight.
I sneak to the edge of the thick line of trees near the rear of the house, staring at the same porch where Kinau made himself at home earlier today. Then, the mansion looked almost cozy. A shiver runs down my spine now when I look at the place. I hadn't realized how foreboding the joint is.
The dark brick façade grabs what few rays of light dare to still struggle to shine and locks them away in the recessed crevices that cover the walls. The tall spires jut into the darkening sky and the quickly gathering clouds hug each gable, as if coming home. The windows suck the looming night into their panes and reflect only darkness.
All the widows, that is, except the one closest to the back door. There's a faint glow coming from inside that window. The vamps that are still here must be congregating in whatever room is on the other side. A meeting place before they walk out the door to feed.
God, I hope they're all in there. Six vamps, one room, me. That would be sweet! Victory is at hand.
I move as stealthily as my legs will carry me past the tree line, over the perfectly manicured lawn. Man, whoever owns this gothic abode loves Bermuda grass. And lilies.
I stop to glance briefly at an ornate black wrought iron gate that encloses a pooled garden of night blooming lilies. The flowers open their blood hued petals to the now fully risen moon. Awakening for the night, like the vamps inside.
Night blooming lilies?
Is that normal for the tropics? I'm not sure. But in the mere seconds I afford the questions, I'm caught off guard. Something big and hard crashes into my back, knocking me face first into the soft Bermuda grass.
The wind is knocked out of my lungs and I take several seconds to recover, despite my dhampir strength.
"What the f—?" I spit grass out of my mouth. My exclamation is cut short when I roll over onto my back and see what hit me.
"Julian?"
His dark features are accentuated in the moon's light, making him even more irresistible looking than the night in the club. Smoldering gray eyes, jet-black hair, shadowed skin, all burning luminously in the night.
His blue aura, highlighted by the moon's glow, dances in waves around his skin. The light moves around him mystically, like the Aurora Borealis, except this is the tropics, not the North Pole. And the aura signals his status as undead, and aren't the result of photon emissions in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Or a dance of the spirits.
The reason for his glow doesn't matter; his light is beautiful. I didn't think it possible for him to be more good looking. I was wrong.
"Orion, what are you doing here?"
I struggle out from under his grip and jump to my feet, dust myself off. "My job. What the fuck are you doing here?"
You're one of them, I think the words but I don't say them. That's what I get for letting a damn vamp get into my head.
I am not one of them. His words are a soft, seductive whisper. "I'm here for the same reason you are."
"What do you mean?" Now I'm confused.
"To kill the Lumière family." He smiles and his teeth sparkle eerily in the night.
I stumble back a few steps, taken off guard by his matter-of-fact explanation. He catches my arm and pulls me to his chest. He tries to wrap his arms around me, but I back away again, determined to stand my ground.
"What do you mean, you're here to kill . . . did you say Lumière family? I didn't know their name." He obviously has more information about these creeps than the Corporation, and that makes me very nervous.
"Yes." He glances behind him toward the back door to the house." Listen, if we're going to kill them, we've got to do it now. Before they leave for the night to feed."
He's right, but I'm not about to agree. This is my kill, not his.
"There's no we in this plan, Julian. The Lumière family is mine." I push past him and stomp toward the back door, leaving stealth lying on the grass behind me.
"Actually, they're mine. The Council sent me to take them out. They're a danger to my kind. This is my job, Orion." His determination matches my own." We might as well work together."
The Council? That's one I haven't heard of before. His job? What is Julian, some kind of vampire terminator? Maybe Julian and I have more in common than I thought.
"I don't work together on any kill and certainly not with one of the enemy."
"Enemy?" He actually sounds a little hurt and a tinge of regret bites at the edges of my conscience for using such a harsh word with him. "Is that who I am? The enemy?"
"Um, hello, vampire—vampire slayer." I use my thumb to motion quickly between us and roll my eyes.
"I am not your enemy, Orion."
