Hi Guys: Maybe I'm considered irrelevant in most circles because I'm an old guy, but I did raise or help raise four children. To my dismay, none of our kids went to college, even though everything would have been paid for them. So I look at this whole education thing in a different light. It seems to me we are looking at a three legged stool: the child, the parents and the school system. One leg fails, and the stool falls. I don't think the problem is what kids eat, although I know we could all eat better. I ate crap growing up and managed to get a Ph.D. somewhere along the line. I still eat a lot of crap. I drink too. What I can say is I wanted an education as far back as I can remember, even selecting my undergraduate college when I was in the sixth grade. My father didn't complete grade school. My mother did graduate from high school, but both accepted I would attend college as long as I could pay for it myself, even though no one on either side of my family chose to go in that direction. I wasn't a union man either, and that didn't help me much at home either. But they still supported my leaving for the U of Wash. That's two legs of the stool. I wanted to go; my parents accepted it. It wasn't easy, but I did it. The third leg failed me. I got a lousy education before I reached college, especially in California. Arizona was much better -- they expected performance. I believe the government can only work on the public school leg of the stool. Society as a whole needs to change to work on the others (like that's going to happen). Relative to public school, far too much time is spent on things that don't matter. Sports in particular. Do we really need a crop of jocks with each class? Overall, I can't help but think there is enough money to educate our kids, but I know from experience the overhead is far too great to be effective. Maybe we need to return to one-room schoolhouses where the teachers could actually maintain discipline.
P.S. Loved your blog!
Hi James!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked my post.
Ha! I changed the format on you though, so you ended up commenting on Gracen's post, lol!
Great comments though! Thanks a bunch for your insight - it just goes to show that the problem is long standing!
