Character interview: Nick Kovacs of Leaving Annalise by Pamela FaganHutchins
We’re here today talking to Nick Kovacs. Nick is a private investigator fromTexas who follows Katie Connell, the girl of his dreams, to a Caribbean island paradise. He appears most recently in Leaving Annalise, the second book in the Katie & Annalise romantic mystery series kicked off by Saving Grace.
Hi Nick, and welcome. I understand you grew up in a beach community. What group did you hang out with in high school?
I grew up in Port Aransas, which is a town on Mustang Island off the coast of Texas. It’s very near Corpus Christi and Padre Island. I hung out with the surfers in high school. Surfing is a really big thing in the area, and lots of people would hang out at the beach and watch the surfers. I even ran into an old surfing buddy of mine from high school in Puerto Rico recently, although I shouldn’t tell you anymore about that since it’s in the book. I also played in a garage band with some of my friends from high school. We called ourselves Stingray, and we were pretty good. I mostly paid for college playing gigs with Stingray.
Do you play any sports now?
I still surf. I run. I do some lifting, and I stay in good shape. But I don’t play team sports. I tried football in high school, but the coach wasn’t a big fan of surfers and bass players who needed haircuts.
So your hair--long or short?
On the long side of respectably short, but they’d kick me out of the military.
You just won a huge lottery what is the first thing you'll buy?
An airplane. I got my pilot’s license in high school--my dad flies, too, and he got me started--and I love to fly. I’ve just never been able to afford to do it too much. I’d love to take Katie up with me and show her Estate Annalise from above. That’s really my dream, to have an airplane. Nothing too big or flashy. Just wings and a propeller, and a great view.
Tell us about your family.
In addition to flying planes for fun, my father Kurt is a ship pilot. He’s specially trained to bring large ships in through ship channels, and he’s been the chief pilot for the Aransas-Corpus Christi Pilots Association. Both he and my mother Julie are originally from a small town in Central Maine. Mom is a musician, though. She even went to Berklee School of Music. She’s amazing. Mostly she teaches piano lessons these days, but she can play any instrument. She doesn’t play the bass though! I have a younger sister named Teresa, and she has a little boy who is awesome. I’m getting to spend a lot of time with him. I’ve never really been around little kids before, and I can’t believe how much fun he is. Anyway, Teresa went through a tough patch, but she’s really got it together now. She just finished her basic training.
They sound great! So, as a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Every other kid I grew up with wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy or a firefighter. I wanted to be a professional surfer or musician. I never even considered being a private investigator, which is what I am now, but I love it. It just turned out that I was really good at reading people and figuring them out. I like it because I’m basically getting paid for doing stuff that’s so much fun that I would do it for free.
Do you still play the bass?
Only in the privacy of my own home, but still turned up very loud.
What is your favorite meal?
Geez, I’m going to sound non-Texan again. I haven’t got anything against cows and beef, really, but I grew up on the water, and I love a good blackened red fish. Throw in some garlic bread and fettucine alfredo with a tall, gorgeous redhead, and I’m a happy, happy man.
Sounds good to us, Nick! Thanks again, and we look forward to reading more about you and Katie in Leaving Annalise.
