Contest and Book Reviews

I'm in a hideously good mood today because I get to move on to Round 2 of the Paranormal Fight Club writing contest!  Thanks to everyone who voted for me and voted in general!

I wasn't sure what to really blog about today, but recent events have put book reviews front and center, so I thought I would appeal to all of our readers out here and ask:

What do you like to see from a book review?

Do you need the x/y (stars, cheese wheels, pennies, fangs, etc.)?

What's more important to you when it comes to a book review - a breakdown of the plot or are you more concerned with the characters and if the author succeeds in engaging the reader from the beginning to end?

What's your opinion on reviews that contain plot spoilers?  Do you love them or hate them?
What does the ideal book review tell you?

Please take the time to answer these questions, so that we can ensure that we are providing you, our readers, with book reviews that you want to read!

Thanks!

SUPERNATURAL SUNDAY

~~~~~
MYRISTICA'S HALLOWED ECHOES PIERCE THE MOONLIGHT
~~~~~

Myristica is the author of GemInI Souls, published by Dark Roast Press. Myristica has been writing since she was 12, she’s a Southern California native and her first book, Crimson Dawn Vol. I - Hallowed Echoes, is the first in a series of books published by Dark Roast Press. To learn more about Myristica, please visit Dark Roast Press.

Thanks for joining us, Myristica. It's a pleasure and an honor to have you with us for Paranormal October. Now, to the juicy stuff...a little bit of trivia about Myristica:

1. Do you have a movie that you must watch every Halloween? What's your favorite scary movie? Do you have a favorite scary character or character type?

I just love the old films of Dracula and Frankenstein. You can’t really beat those. Especially when Renfield goes insane and laughs. That laughter is downright freaky. As for character types, I enjoy the anti-hero persona. The one who is on the fence between good and evil. The werewolf is a good example of that. Or Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde. You have that struggle within. Conflict without is easily identifiable, and with help you can defeat the attack against you, but when the attack is within you...that’s where you must conquer it on your own. It’s a great means to strengthen and help the character to grow.

2. Do you have any Halloween traditions like decorating your house, having house parties, wearing costumes, etc.?

If I had the money, I would do all of that. As it stands, I am learning how to do a Halloween ritual (as you know Halloween is the witch’s New Year). I do wear a costume to work on Halloween, but I don’t have the money to do anything elaborate or fancy. For the last two years I’ve gone as a Led Zeppelin roadie with a twist, complete with a broken headset for a prop, Zeppelin cap and a Jimmy Page t-shirt. I get to show off my love for Zeppelin and under the guise of Halloween, so it’s fun! (See the next question for the twist.)

3. If you do you dress up for Halloween, what will you be dressed up as this year? What was your all-time most favorite costume that you ever wore? Why?

I guess I’ll go as a Zeppelin roadie again this year. Only because it’s just a joy for me to tell others who I am. My main response to their question, “Who are you?” Is: “I’m an Egyptian scribe reincarnated as a Zeppelin roadie.” I wear an ankh and the eye make-up of ancient Egyptian culture. I think the response gets them more than the costume itself. LOL!

4. Are you superstitious? Do you find yourself knocking on wood or throwing salt over your shoulder? If not one of these two, what is your superstition?

I am superstitious, but only on the knowledge that what you put into the lives of others you may someday receive in your own. I do knock on wood, but have never had an occasion to throw salt over the shoulder. I also make sure I tell the Universe, “Just joking, Universe! Just joking!” when I say things out of line. (What with the Law of Attraction teachings, some things that are said just need to be buffered a bit.)

5. Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you ever had a ghostly encounter and tell us about it?

I do believe in ghosts, but have not had an encounter. I would love to have one, though. One of these days I’m going to find out how to visit a haunted place and see what I can see, or feel what I can feel. My cat, on the other hand, I think he’s seen quite a few. One time he raised his hackles and stalked the apartment for something he saw that I couldn’t.

6. Tell us 3 funny or strange things that happened to you, or someone you know, on past Halloweens.

Honestly, I can’t really say I’ve had anything strange happen to me on Halloween. Not yet, anyway. I keep hoping!

7. If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?

A vampire, only because I would love to learn all there was to learn in this world and the immortality would be great, plus I’m a great night person. I think I could thrive if I could live my life at night. Since I don’t believe in death being the end, it would make a great analogy of an eternal life scenario.

Now, let’s get to your writing:

8. Why the paranormal genre? What was the draw for you?

I started really getting into the paranormal after I became Pagan. The study of mythological creatures and the calling of the elementals during circle rituals became a fascination with me. The moon phases became another object of study. I write in the paranormal and fantasy genres because of the incredible dexterity of ideas the imagination can follow. I miss being able to fantasize as a child and this is a great means to exercise and use the imagination.

9. If you could describe your paranormal writing with a word or phrase, what would it be? Please be creative and look beyond words like vampire, werewolf, etc., and delve into the core of your writing to tell us what word or phrase you want readers to take with them when they've finished reading your story.

It’s a saying I’ve learned to believe in over the last eight years since becoming Pagan: Light cannot exist without darkness. The stories I write are dramatic because through that, the love between my heroes strengthens. I want them to grow stronger in each other as well as within themselves. The darkness is necessary for us to truly appreciate the light. It is all good.

10. Do you prefer playing tricks on people or bestowing treats? Does that show through in your writing? If so, how?

With Halloween, I actually love to bestow treats because it’s a joy to watch the smiles on the kids’ faces (those I can see through the masks, anyway J). In my writing I utilize both because sometimes misdirection (trick) can lead to a more fulfilling revelation later...and that is actually the treat.

11. Who decides what creatures you write about, you or your muse? What kind of influence do you have over your story, or is the muse always the one stirring the cauldron?

That is a very interesting question, because it was recently revealed to me via a personal experience that though I may think the story is mine, the story actually writes itself. Where I want to go may not be the direction the story line wants to go. When I fight with it, the story stalls, when I let go and flow with it, the story begins to emerge. The creatures come to me as ideas first and then the actual development of them comes to me as the story moves forward, so I would have to say that the muses really are just using me as a “ghost writer”.

12. What was the creature that you had the most fun creating and why?

The Black Tigress. She comes from another world and the tiger that is sacred to this world is black with red stripes and golden eyes. The idea of a black tigress shape-shifter really intrigued me, and how she became this shape-shifter, from that of a vampire, was the challenge. Some ideas I learned from my Wicca classes really helped me there.

13. If you had the opportunity to meet just one of your characters in real life, who would it be and why? Which of your characters would you never want to meet under any circumstance and why?

I would love to meet Hampton. He’s the vampire. Been around for hundreds of years and I would love to tap his mind on history and his take on things nocturnal. Plus he has such frickin confidence in his schemes. He plays with fire and is not afraid to get burned, just as long as it’s not sunlight. I modeled him after many traditional vampire characteristics, but I don’t focus on those. I focus on his desires, what drives him, or I should say what inspires him. Of course it goes without saying that I would love to hook up with Kevin and Vic from the CD series as well. If anything just to watch them make googly eyes at each other and beat Hampton at his own game.

The character I do not want to meet is Arina, the Black Tigress. She kills with such ferocity and at random that no one is safe. You can look at her cross-eyed and end up with a slashed throat. The woman is the queen of ‘Miss’ Bitches.

Please send us pictures whenever possible of the favorite costume you wore, favorite costume you’ve seen, and your costume for this year as well as your current release (or a couple if it’s part of a series and they are out and about to be had right now). Thanks!

Well, I don’t have any pictures, as I’d rather stay anonymous in this world of Male/Male and paranormal writing. But you can see a picture of one of my animal guides which is a raven. I also have a bat that is an animal guide. So I’ll be including an image of a vampire bat as well. It’s a close-up so don’t freak out.

Private investigator Kevin Laredo lost his wife and children to vengeful and corrupt cops. For the past three years he’s not been able to look at another woman, let alone date, but when Vic Turner comes into his life, suddenly Kevin’s heart comes alive again. Both share a past that connects them, but when Kevin brings Vic into his private investigative team, another member, Jonathan Palomino, is unnerved by the incredible resemblance Vic holds to his deceased lover, Andrew Shields.

When Vic is called on by the team to go undercover to investigate a missing person, Kevin vehemently refuses, causing conflict between him and Vic. Are Kevin’s feelings for Vic going beyond that of a good friend and is that why he’s becoming so overprotective?

To make matters worse, multi-million dollar mogul Thomas Hampton, the vampire who caused Andrew’s death, comes back into Jonathan’s life to seek his aid in recapturing the Black Tigress, a rogue vampire shape-shifter, who escaped her prison. Arina is out to destroy Hampton for betraying her four hundred years before and she will stop at nothing until she’s brought Hampton down one peg at a time, including committing murders that could end up exposing all beings hiding on earth from other dimensions and possibly causing a modern day Inquisition. To keep Jonathan from bolting from the request to help, Hampton marks Vic to use his life and soul as hostage.

Uninvited Visitor...

Upon entering his house, Vic stripped off his dark suede jacket, careful not to aggravate the injury to his arm, and hung it on the coat rack just inside the entryway. He examined the cut and blood stain made by the knife. Muttering a disgusted, “Damn,” he shook his head. “Well, maybe that cleaning place down the street can take care of it.” He turned away, refusing to cry over spilled blood. He accepted that it was his own damned fault for wearing the thing while searching for a bounty. He tossed his keys into a small bowl on the inside table he also used for mail and went into the kitchen to get a beer, unable to stop thinking about the last few hours with Kevin.

The conversation with Kevin at the bar only a half-hour ago had been full of mostly silence. A few words of observation on that night’s events, but Vic got the impression that Kevin simply needed to come down from his adrenalin high. Plus, he had been scared for Vic when that knife had been thrown. Damn scared.

So much concern from the guy, and they had only been working together for a week.

It made Vic wonder just what was going on between them, if anything, and if he should really let his wishful thinking get the better of him.

Was Kevin developing feelings for him? If so, then were those feelings simply from a deep-rooted friendship due to their interactive, though choppy past encounters? A friendship based on similar losses and circumstances?

Did Kevin need to be near Vic as a bonded friend, a brother figure…or was there something more?

Vic rolled his eyes as he took another swig from his bottle of beer. He could allow his mind to go where his common sense feared to tread, letting his imagination wander into the forbidden grounds of hoping against hope, but in reality, no one had ever been able to truly stop their heart from desiring what it always desired…to fall in love with someone and have that person fall in love with them.

Vic shut his eyes and leaned back against his kitchen sink. His arm throbbed as the local anesthetic started to wear off. He would have to take a pain pill in a bit, but not right now, not while he was drinking and thinking…and hoping.

Perhaps it was all part of the ‘friendship’ thing. It had been forever since Vic had found a friend he could love simply as a friend and nothing more. A friend like a brother. In fact…had he ever had such a friend?

Maybe that’s what this was with Kevin—a friendship that could touch the soul of a man and allow him to take lingering comfort in such a shelter.

Vic stared off at a magnet on his refrigerator door. It was a small regular magnet, nothing ornate or symbolic, just a black background with white letters spelling out: ‘God, save me from your followers’. It was just something to focus on as his brain trampled over all analytical possibilities.

Kevin had needed to be with Vic after the knife incident. Before that, he had wanted to be at Vic’s side to help him capture the bounty. It was camaraderie, and both of them seemed to crave it from the other.

Vic could have easily confessed to Kevin that he was gay, given the fact that Kevin, if anything, had his head on straight when it came to the tolerance issue. But it was too soon to explore that side of the coin as yet. The time simply wasn’t right. Then again, would the time ever be right?

A shadow swept across the kitchen window that looked out to the backyard, and then the sound of something crashing to the wooden deck of his porch broke his line of thought.

Vic froze. He focused his hearing and listened intently. The house was dark except for the light in the living room. None of the security lights had kicked on regardless of the fact that something was out in the backyard. He quietly set his bottle of beer on the counter and pulled his .45 from the holster still strapped to his waist. It didn’t matter that the wound had been inflicted on the arm he normally used to shoot. Vic had been trained to use a gun with both hands, and so he gripped the butt of the .45 in his left hand and took in a deep breath.

He stealthily moved out through the back door and examined the area around the deck. He saw nothing, smelled nothing and heard nothing but the normal sounds of outside; crickets singing their final song before fall hibernation, tree leaves rustling in the evening breeze.

He took a step off his deck and the movement caused the security lights to flash on, yet even with that extra illumination, he could see nothing except for a planter that had fallen from its wire stand. It was an aloe plant, its broken leaves spilling their healing liquid onto the wood of the deck. As was his nature, he quickly sent up a prayer to Demeter to ask her help in the plant’s healing. He reached down and carefully set the potted plant upright again. Hopefully he could save the rest of the plant later, but right now…he needed to make sure no one was creeping around his backyard.

It could have been a cat, or a raccoon, or a squirrel rummaging around, sure, but the thing that had passed the window had been too tall for a four-legged beast.

Vic’s heart pounded against his ribcage, as he moved quietly over to the big pine tree in the center of his backyard.

Careful to not make a sound, he put his back to the trunk, holding his gun up, and inched around, listening for anything that didn’t sound like it should belong. A flash of movement, too quick for him to react, and he felt a hand clamp down on his gun hand, squeezing it with incredible strength, forcing his fingers to let go of the butt. The gun dropped to the ground and another hand grabbed him by the back of the neck, pulling him forward.

Everything happened too quickly, and he was suddenly looking into gray eyes and a deathly pale face. He opened his mouth to yell, when the urge to call out was stifled by a vice-like squeeze at the back of his neck. He winced, pulling in a quick intake of breath.

The hand was cold, like death, and the smell of the grave triggered a nasty memory in his subconscious.

Something…something from a past he wasn’t sure was his own filtered through his inner vision, and he fought to chase it, to grab it and face it head on. But it was too elusive, like a specter riding the wind.

“I’m afraid that I’m going to need a bargaining chip in the days and months ahead, beautiful one. Don’t worry. You won’t remember any of this.”

The voice was warm and sensual, calculating and confident. Vic’s body went numb under the heady effects of both the touch on his body and the voice that caressed his mind. He felt cold lips brush over the back of his neck, under his hair, and the sharp sting of teeth sinking into his flesh.

In seconds everything disappeared into darkness.

+++++

The morning sunlight broke through his window, and Vic woke to the warmth with a sluggish feeling coursing through his limbs. He felt as though he’d been drugged, had gone to bed and passed out.

Had he drunk that much with Kevin the night before?

He couldn’t remember being that drunk. Relaxed, yes, but not wasted. There was also the fact that there were no symptoms of a hangover banging through the inside of his skull. He threw off the covers, and discovered he was still dressed and his shoes were placed neatly on the floor by his bed.

His gun holster was draped over the chair in the corner of his room, but something was wrong with it. It looked weird. He did a second take and realized what was out of place. The gun was out of place. It was on the nightstand by his alarm clock.

Vic gazed at it, now officially worried. He didn’t remember pulling the thing last night.

He didn’t remember a lot of things.

How in the hell did he end up in bed fully clothed with his gun out of its holster? And just how did he get into bed to begin with?

And that damn dull throb in the back of his neck wasn’t helping his ability to think. He reached back and rubbed the area, touching a very tender and bruised spot.

“Shit,” he muttered. “What in the hell hit me last night?”

His phone rang.

Groggily reaching for the receiver he answered with a slurring, “Turner,” which sounded more like; ‘Durner.’

Click.

He groaned. It was too early in the morning to have wrong numbers. He hung up and rubbed his face. Shit! Feeling damn woozy this morning.

Then he looked at the bandage on his forearm, amazed that the knife wound didn’t hurt like he thought it would. He glanced over at his digital clock and saw that it was seven-thirty. It was past time to apply some antibiotic ointment to the wound. He stood up and went into the bathroom to find some scissors to cut off the gauze. And when he did, and the gauze came off, he stumbled back against the wall and slid to the floor, shock draining his body of feeling.

The wound was completely healed.

Starlight Saturday

YA Author Spotlight Presents...
Alyson Noel
Alyson Noel!!!

1.  Do you have a movie that you must watch every Halloween?  What's your favorite scary movie? Do you have a favorite scary character or character type?

My favorite scary movie is “Silence of the Lambs.” I know it’s not scary in the traditional sense with monster and ghouls and ghosts, but still, I’ll never forget how terrified I was the first time I saw it in the theater!

2.  Do you have any Halloween traditions like decorating your house, having house parties, wearing costumes, etc.?

Not to sound like a party pooper, but I don’t. I don’t have kids so maybe that’s why. Sometimes my husband and I skip it entirely and go out to dinner, and sometimes we say home and pass out candy, it all depends. Though, rest assured, when I do pass out candy, I make sure I buy the “good stuff!”

3. If you do you dress up for Halloween, what will you be dressed up as this year?  What was your all-time most favorite costume that you ever wore?  Why?

Hmmm, don’t think I’m dressing up this year, but my favorite costume was at age 4 or 5 when my mom made me a flapper costume consisting of this gorgeous little turquoise fringed dress, long beads, a feathered head band, and lipstick—I felt extremely glamorous and even begged to sleep in it!

[since there's no image to offer you here, we'll stick in one of Marie Antoinette & Count Fersen, taken from the movie with Kirsten Dunst, but it represents the costumes that Damen and Ever wore to Ever's Halloween party in Evermore.]

Marie & Count Fersen

4. Are you superstitious?  Do you find yourself knocking on wood or throwing salt over your shoulder?  If not one of these two, what is your superstition?

I am definitely a jinx-fearing person. I absolutely will not announce good news until it is fact—any sooner, and I’m sure it’ll disappear!

5.  Do you believe in ghosts?  If so, have you ever had a ghostly encounter and tell us about it?

Yes and yes.

I’ve had several encounters through the years that I could find no logical explanation for that have led me to believe that some form of energy lives on long after the body is gone.

6.  Tell us 3 funny or strange things that happened to you, or someone you know, on past Halloweens.

Hmmm, drawing a blank here, sorry!

7.  If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?

I would be a shape shifter—I think it would be so cool to experience life in different forms!

Now, let’s get to your writing:

Evermore8. Why the paranormal genre?  What was the draw for you?

Although I’ve always loved paranormal books, TV shows, and movies, I wasn’t so much focused on the genre, as the particular story I wanted to tell. I’d just gone through this terrible time of grief, losing three loved ones in five months and then nearly losing my husband to leukemia (he’s in full remission now), and the big questions of life and death, mortality and immortality were looming large in my mind and Ever and Damen’s story was sort of born from there.

9. If you could describe your paranormal writing with a word or phrase, what would it be?  Please be creative and look beyond words like vampire, werewolf, etc., and delve into the core of your writing to tell us what word or phrase you want readers to take with them when they've finished reading your story.

The price of physical immortality—is it worth it?

Blue Moon10. Do you prefer playing tricks on people or bestowing treats?  Does that show through in your writing?  If so, how?

No, to the tricks, I hate it when people are made to feel awkward or bad, and a big YES to the treats! I hope it comes through in my writing since I try to show people going through tough times, stumbling and falling along the way, but then ultimately getting their reward at the end of the difficult journey.

11. Who decides what creatures you write about, you or your muse?  What kind of influence do you have over your story, or is the muse always the one stirring the cauldron?

Me. Although sometimes the characters take me in new directions I didn’t expect or see coming . . .

12. What was the creature that you had the most fun creating and why?

I loved writing Riley’s 12-year-old ghost character and am thrilled to revive her (so to speak!) when she gets her own series in Fall 2010.

Also, I hate to say it, but Roman is also a blast—he’s self-serving, narcissistic, and more than a little evil, but really, really fun to write!

13. If you had the opportunity to meet just one of your characters in real life, who would it be and why?  Which of your characters would you never want to meet under any circumstance and why?

Well, I would love to meet Damen, though for purely selfish and shallow reasons, though I hope to never run into Drina, she’s a little scary!

EXCERPT: SHADOWLAND
Chapter one:

“Fate is nothing but the deeds committed in a prior state of existence.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

One

“Everything is energy.”

Damen’s dark eyes focus on mine, urging me to listen, really listen this time. “Everything around us—” His arm sweeps before him, tracing a fading horizon that’ll soon fade to black. “Everything in this seemingly solid universe of ours isn’t solid at all—it’s energy—pure vibrating energy. And while our perception may convince us that things are either solid or liquid or gaseous—on the quantum level it’s all just particles within particles—it’s all just energy.”

I press my lips together and nod, his voice overpowered by the one in my head urging: Tell him! Tell him now! Quit stalling, and just get it over with! Hurry, before he starts talking again!

But I don’t. I don’t say a word. I just wait for him to continue so I can delay even further.

“Raise your hand.” He nods, palm face out, moving toward mine. Lifting my arm slowly, cautiously, determined to avoid any and all physical contact when he says, “Now tell me, what do you see?”

I squint, unsure what he’s after, then shrugging I say, “Well, I see pale skin, long fingers, a freckle or two, nails in serious need of a manicure . . .”

“Exactly.” He smiles, as though I just passed the world’s easiest test. “But if you could see it as it really is, you wouldn’t see that at all. Instead you’d see a swarm of molecules containing protons, neutrons, electrons, and quarks. And within those tiny quarks, down to the most miniscule point, you’d see nothing but pure vibrating energy moving at a slow enough speed that makes it appear solid and dense, and yet quickly enough that it can’t be observed for what it truly is.”

I narrow my eyes, not sure I believe it. Never mind the fact that he’s been studying this stuff for hundreds of years.

“Seriously, Ever. Nothing is separate.” He leans toward me, fully warmed up to his subject now. “Everything is one. Items that appear dense, like you, and I, and this sand that we’re sitting on is really just a mass of energy vibrating slowly enough to seem solid, while things like ghosts and spirits vibrate so quickly they’re nearly impossible for most humans to see.”

“I see Riley,” I say, eager to remind him of all the time I used to spend with my ghostly sister. “Or at least I used to, you know, before she crossed the bridge and moved on.”

“And that’s exactly why you can’t see her anymore.” He nods. “Her vibration is moving too fast. Though there are those who can see past all of that.”

I gaze at the ocean before us, the swells rolling in, one after another. Endless, unceasing, immortal—like us.

“Now raise your hand again and bring it so close to mine we just nearly touch.”

I hesitate, filling my palm with sand, unwilling to do it. Unlike him, I know the price, the dire consequences the slightest skin on skin contact can bring. Which is why I’ve been avoiding his touch since last Friday. But when I peer at him again, his palm face out, waiting for mine, I take a deep breath and lift my hand too—gasping when he draws so close the space that divides is razor thin.

“Feel that?” He smiles. “That tingle and heat? That’s our energy connecting.” He moves his hand back and forth, manipulating the push and pull of the energy force field between us.

“But if we’re all connected like you say, then why doesn’t it all feel the same?” I whisper, drawn by the undeniable magnetic stream that links us, causing the most wonderful warmth to course through my body.

“We are all connected, all of us made of the same vibrating source. But while some energy leaves you cold and some leaves you lukewarm, the one that you’re destined for? It feels just like this.”

I close my eyes and turn away, allowing the tears to stream down my cheeks, no longer able to keep them in check. Knowing I’m barred from the feel of his skin, the touch of his lips, the solid warm comfort of his body on mine. This electric energy field that trembles between us is the closest I’ll get, thanks to the horrible decision I made.

“Science is just now catching up with what metaphysicians and the great spiritual teachers have known for centuries. Everything is energy. Everything is one.”

I can hear the smile in his voice as he draws closer, eager to entwine his fingers with mine. But I move away quickly, catching his eye just long enough to see the look of hurt that crosses his face—the same look he’s been giving since I made him drink the antidote that returned him to life. Wondering why I’m acting so quiet, so distant, so remote—refusing to touch him when just a few weeks before I couldn’t get enough. Incorrectly assuming it’s because of his hurtful behavior—his flirting with Stacia, his cruelty toward me—when the truth is, it has nothing to do with that. He was under Roman’s spell, the entire school was. It wasn’t his fault.

What he doesn’t know is that while the antidote returned him to life, the moment I added my blood to the mix it also insured we could never be together.

Never.

Ever.

For all of eternity.

Unless we can find an antidote to the antidote, that is.

“Ever?” he whispers, voice deep and sincere. But I can’t look at him. Can’t touch him. And I certainly can’t utter the words he deserves to hear:

I messed up—I’m so sorry—Roman tricked me, and I was desperate and dumb enough to fall for his ploy—And now there’s no hope for us because if you kiss me, if we exchange our DNA—you’ll die—
I can’t do it. I’m the worst kind of coward. I’m pathetic and weak. And there’s just no way I can find it within me.

“Ever please, what is it?” he asks, alarmed by my tears. “You’ve been like this for days. Is it me? Is it something I’ve done? Because you know I don’t remember much of what happened, and the memories that are starting to surface, well, you must know by now that wasn’t the real me. I would never intentionally hurt you. I’d never harm you in any way.”

I hug myself tightly, scrunching my shoulders and bowing my head. Wishing I could make myself smaller, so small he could no longer see me. Knowing his words are true, that he’s incapable of hurting me, only I could do something so hurtful, so rash, so ridiculously impulsive. Only I could be stupid enough to fall for Roman’s bait. So eager to prove myself as Damen’s one true love—wanting to be the only one who could save him—and now look at the mess that I’ve made.

He moves toward me, sliding his arm around me, grasping my waist and pulling me near. But I can’t risk the closeness, my tears are lethal now, and must be kept far from his skin.

I scramble to my feet and run toward the ocean, curling my toes at its edge and allowing the cold white froth to splash onto my shins. Wishing I could dive under its vastness and be carried by the tide. Anything to avoid saying the words—anything to avoid telling my one true love, my eternal partner, my soul mate for the last four hundred years, that while he may have given me eternity—I’ve brought us our end.

I remain like that, silent and still. Waiting for the sun to sink until I finally turn to face him. Taking in his dark shadowy outline, nearly indistinguishable from the night, and speaking past the sting in my throat when I mumble, “Damen . . . baby . . .there’s something I need to tell you.”

PANTASM FRIDAY

~~~~~
JILL NOBLE SPICES UP THE MOONLIGHT
~~~~~

Today, Jill Noble of Noble Romance Publishing (NRP), a growing publisher of Erotica writing, joins us at Moonlight, Lace and Mayhem! I am excited because I get to pick her brain and serve you the best “bites”!

In league with the growing craze of craft beer tastings, we are doing a 10 and 6. Only we aren’t offering beers, we’re offering “bites.” First, we’ll offer you 10 writing bites and then we’ll give 6 fun bites!

1. With NRP being an e-book publisher, you must prefer the digital medium. Can you help us to see the e-publishing industry through your eyes? How has the digital medium affected the publishing industry and what do you see for the future of the e-publishing world? Will it one day eliminate the need for paper books? Why or why not?

It’s always exciting to be in on the (somewhat) ground floor of an up-and-coming industry. Epublishing intrigues me because it’s so fluid, so changeable. In just a few minutes, a publisher can begin testing a new format, a new marketing/advertising technique, a new sub-genre etc.

Publishing and the Internet work well together – you have the opportunity to poll your readers, receive instant feedback on new releases, interact with your customers on a daily basis, instantaneously weigh results (sales, site traffic flow, etc). It’s completely different from print publishing on so many important levels. Internet-savvy readers expect to have their voices heard, to interact with both publisher and authors, to become a part of a community. It’s important to talk *with* your readers, not at them.

I don’t concern myself overly much with the whole “will ebooks replace print books” question. That’s not my focus. I think we’ll continue to see huge percentage increases in ebook sales each year. I do believe epublishing is in its infancy, and we’re exploring new and exciting territory, and we have an obligation to continue finding ways to present even higher quality books to our readers.

2. With e-publishers popping up and some folding, constantly changing the face of online publishing, what do you feel makes NRP stand out from all the rest? Why should an author choose you over your competition? What can NRP offer that others can’t or won’t?

As dumb as this might sound, I don’t think NRP “stands out” from all the rest. We stand head and neck above *some* of the other epublishers out there, simply because we treat our authors in a fair, professional manner and we’re releasing quality books. Unfortunately, there are a few sharks in the water. However, I believe there are several excellent epublishers, such as Samhain, Loose Id – and Noble, etcetera, and that’s great news for authors because it provides them with the opportunity to find the right publisher for *their* work. Choices – good choices – are always nice. ;-)

There are two things about NRP that seem to be a little different from the others. One, we offer up to a 1,000 dollar advance against royalties. And two, we really work hard to allow our authors to be true to their characters and their stories, even if they aren’t your standard “erotic romance novel” fare.

Anyone can go to your website and find your submissions guidelines, but if they don’t search around, they will not find key pieces of information that many writers should know, such as the blog topics that you put up every so often.

3. You published the following list in September 2008 in the blog topic, “5 Common Manuscript Mistakes.”

Briefly, they are as follows:
1. The Boring Beginning.
2. Incoherent Writing.
3. Overuse of “it” and “that.”
4. Overuse of certain words or phrases.
5. Incorrect and/or redundant dialogue tags.

And about a month after this list, you mentioned how some authors tend to, “rewind,” a scene when they switch from one character’s pov to another.

Since then, have you found any other mistakes that authors commonly make in their manuscripts that should be added to this list?

Oh, that blog is sorely outdated. I don’t like the format, and have put in a request to our technical department to make some changes, but that’s far down the list of priorities. I started another blog – Noble Expressions – on Wordpress, and I’m using that one much more often.

But to answer your question. Yes, I see other mistakes. Poor transitions between scenes, head-hopping, telling instead of showing, and disembodied body parts (His eyes caressed her body, instead of he caressed her with his eyes.) I honestly try not to focus on the negative when I’m reading a submission, because all these things are fixable and worth my time and effort if it’s a great story. Unfortunately, these mistakes usually come in packages, and are combined with a not-so-great book.

4. Referring to, “Submissions I’d Love to See,” another blog topic, you have a list there of the types of erotic stories you wanted to see more of then. Has that list changed? Are there any new categories that a potential author should know about?

I’m all about *different.* Give me something that catches my attention, surprise me, make me sit up and pay attention. I read so many submissions each week – something needs to really stand out in the crowd to catch my eye.

5. Focusing more on your submissions guidelines, you tell authors you want hot and steamy. Using the Scoville Pepper Scale as a guide (but altered a tiny bit), how would you rate the stories you publish?

Mild 0 to 5000
Medium 5000 to 20,000
Hot 20,000 to 70,000
Smoking Hot 70,000 to 300,000
On Fire 300,000 to 1,000,000
Inferno 1,000,000 to16,000,000

I’d say most of our stories range somewhere between Hot and Inferno, with the majority falling in the On Fire category. ;-) However, we do have something on our site for just about every taste, and we’re going to test the “sweet romance” sub-genre in the near future.

6. Referring to your submissions guidelines, you ask for specific information when authors submit their proposal. Can you explain, for those writers not quite familiar enough with the phrase, what you mean by, “the black moment,” of a story?

The black moment is normally toward the end of the story, and it’s that period where everything seems to have gone to hell in a handbasket. It’s the point where the reader thinks, “Oh, no. That’s it. They’re done. Things will never work out for these characters,” even though they know, in the back of their mind, it will because this is romance.

7. With your manuscript submissions, why .rtf (rich text format) over .doc (WORD doc)?

Safer that way. Word documents can contain viruses.

8. In your estimation, what makes an author an ideal candidate for NRP, or is it more about the writing than it is about the author?

It’s definitely more about the book than the author, however, since we’re an epublishing company, an author should work to build an online presence within the ebook reader/writer community. This means blogging, building a Web site, taking part in online communities such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.

9. You give a timeline, for when an author should hear a response about a manuscript (24 hours for receipt confirmation, 2 weeks for response), but what would you say is your average rate of manuscript acceptance (X out of Y per month)?

Unfortunately, our rate of acceptance is pretty low. I haven’t done the math recently, but I know I reject many more submissions than I accept.

10. Many authors have been burned by some smaller publishing presses and felt like they were left to fend for themselves in terms of book publicity among other things. What would you say to an author to allay his or her fears about this happening again? How would you demonstrate to them that they would not be alone when publishing with NRP?

I personally work with the authors who need assistance in this area, and we’re also fortunate to have a group of authors already with us who are more than willing to lend a helping hand. I will consult with new authors on various advertising ideas and techniques, pay for advertising slots if they’d like to test different venues, etc. We have a large mailing list and we send emails out regarding new releases. We also announce new releases on various social Web sites, send all our books out for reviews, and work hard to maintain an online presence. But in the end, a lot of an author’s success is up to that individual author. As I said earlier, epublishing is a totally different animal from print publishing. An author simply must take the time to build their online presence and build a readership. They also need to keep writing and releasing good books. In epublishing, patience is definitely a virtue. J

Now, the fun stuff:

11. Are you superstitious? Do you find yourself knocking on wood or throwing salt over your shoulder? If not one of these two, what is your superstition?

Sometimes, in passing. If I think about it, I won’t step on a crack so I don’t “break my mother’s back.” If I see a black cat cross my path, I’ll think it just might be a bad day. Those sorts of things. LOL. But nothing major, no. I believe in fate and destiny, but I’m not really superstitious.

12. Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you ever had a ghostly encounter and tell us about it?

No, I don’t. I’ve lost two people who were really close to me, and I think if ghosts existed – if it were possible to have contact between the dead and the living – I would have heard from at least one of those lost loved ones.

13. If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?

A witch. Like Samantha, from Bewitched. I loved that show when I was a child, and I think it would be cool to harness magic.

14. If you had the opportunity to meet any of the characters in the books published by NRP who would it be and why?

OMG, Miki, from Barb Sheridan’s Beautiful C*cksucker and BC II, Such a Good Boy. He just comes across as so sexy and incredible. A really yummy bad boy!

15. By contrast, which character would you never want to meet?

The green fairy in Absinthe Eyes and Other Lies…probably because if you meet her, chances are you’re insane. :-/

16. Of all the stories that you read for NRP, which one has shaken you to your core, so much so that you still cannot get it out of your mind?

Absinthe Eyes and Other Lies. It’s dark erotic romance (and some might even argue the romance angle, but it’s there), and not everyone’s cuppa, but I absolutely loved it. It’s very Poe-like. Well written. And the author did an amazing job putting together the plot.

TWILIGHT THURSDAY

~~~~~
ETIENNE D'ARTAGNAN
HAUNTS THE MOONLIGHT
~~~~~

Etienne D'Artagnan is the author of In Alien Arms, released by Liquid Silver Books. Her newest release, Unfinished Business, is also released by Liquid Silver Books. Both books can be found here: Liquid Silver Books

I want to thank Etienne for blogging with us today. It's a pleasure to have you with us. We're excited to learn more about you and your books. So, let's get started with the hard stuff...some trivia about you:

1. Do you have a movie that you must watch every Halloween? No, not really. What's your favorite scary movie? I do not care much for scary movies, I prefer romantic movies. Do you have a favorite scary character or character type? Oh my no, but I do like bad boys...

2. Do you have any Halloween traditions like decorating your house, having house parties, wearing costumes, etc.?

Being French I have never celebrated Halloween. My wearing costumes has more to do with role playing. Cowboys are a favorite, there is just something about those spurs...

3. If you do you dress up for Halloween, what will you be dressed up as this year? What was your all-time most favorite costume that you ever wore?

There was a set of chaps I was fond of...

Why? Can we print that here?

4. Are you superstitious? Do you find yourself knocking on wood or throwing salt over your shoulder? If not one of these two, what is your superstition?

Ah, no, I am quite boring, not superstitious at all.

5. Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you ever had a ghostly encounter and tell us about it?

I don't know if believe is the right word. I have had a strange experience once on a trip to Venice for Carnival, I saw a strange figure watching me that no one else could see.

6. Tell us 3 funny or strange things that happened to you, or someone you know, on past Halloweens.

I cannot recall anything really.

7. If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?

An Elf. For the shoes cher.

Now, let’s get to your writing:

8. Why the paranormal genre? What was the draw for you?

One can do anything in the paranormal genre, much like the science fiction genre which is my other favorite

9. If you could describe your paranormal writing with a word or phrase, what would it be? Please be creative and look beyond words like vampire, werewolf, etc., and delve into the core of your writing to tell us what word or phrase you want readers to take with them when they've finished reading your story.

Ah, I would say eerie. I would like readers to say "Wow, I did not expect that," when they finish one of my stories.

10. Do you prefer playing tricks on people or bestowing treats? Does that show through in your writing? If so, how?

I much prefer bestowing treats, it is so much more fun. I like to think the treat in my stories is taking the reader into my world for awhile and entertaining them.

11. Who decides what creatures you write about, you or your muse? What kind of influence do you have over your story, or is the muse always the one stirring the cauldron?

The muse always heavily influences me. He regularly tells me I am crazy.

12. What was the creature that you had the most fun creating and why?

That would be my Troll which I am working on now. He is so annoyed at being in our world.

13. If you had the opportunity to meet just one of your characters in real life, who would it be and why? John the ghost from Unfinished Business, he is so sexy. Which of your characters would you never want to meet under any circumstance and why? I don't know, I have never thought about that.

EXCERPT:

I was cold. I wasn't really sure where I was. There was just this strange grey fog all around me. The Shiloh battlefield was gone. No more screaming, no Union soldiers, no Confederate boys, no more cannon fire, just soft foggy quiet.

A pain pierced my heart. I clutched my chest and squeezed my eyes shut but no tears spilled down my cheeks. What was going to happen to Amber and Michael? A wave of loneliness hit me and I dropped to my knees, hugging myself in my misery. I couldn't imagine being without them, never seeing them again. The thought was intolerable.

"John Marcus Carson, are you ready?" a deep voice asked from somewhere just behind me. In a panic I turned, trying to see who had spoken. I had thought I was alone.

"No!" I shouted. "No, I'm not ready," I added in a softer voice. In my mind, I could see Amber laughing and Michael watching her with his hungry eyes. I needed them, needed to be with them. I turned in a slow circle still looking for any sign of the speaker. All I saw was grey.

"I can't stay here. I have things to do. Michael and Amber, I promised them... Unfinished business," I whispered, fear and longing shooting through me. I thought of my two loves again. My need for them overwhelmed me and just like that, I was looking down at them. They were in Amber's bed and oh Lord, she had her legs wrapped around Michael's hips and he was giving her an ace-high fucking.

In desperation, I reached out to them. This wasn't the way things were supposed to end. Suddenly I was on the road to the Bar-A Ranch. I felt a sense of time being critically short and ran down the road. I had to get to the two people who meant everything to me before it was too late.

I ran, not tiring, until I realized I wasn't really going anywhere. Haste, it seemed, was the wrong approach. I stopped and took a deep breath. Or tried to. My body remembered the movements and the sensation, but no air filled my lungs. For a long moment I just froze. Then I had to do it again. I laughed from the sheer strangeness of it.

This wasn't some drunk-off-my-ass dream. I knew I was dead. Just like I knew I had to go home. All those people who say a ghost haunts a place because the poor idiot doesn't know he's dead are fooling themselves. Trust me on this, when you're dead, you know it. I thought about the stories the old Cook at the ranch used to tell about ghosts. He was wrong on so many things, and right on so many others. I began to make a plan.

Making Mayhem with Melissa Burmester

When Writing Fiction: How do you make your characters believable?

When writing a fiction short story or a bestselling novel the plot is important, but the characters in the story have to appear real and believable. The reader will lose interest if the character is perfect in every way. I have used these tips when I wrote my book Ginger High.

As you begin to expand your characters it is very important to:

  1. Create flaws for each character-

    - If the character is perfect no one will care if he succeeds or not.

    - The flaws may help to strengthen the plot and help to move it along. This will keep the reader interested and they will finish the book.

    • The reader may relate to the character because they may have the same flaws that the character may have. They will continue to read on to see if the character is able to overcome their problems.
    • The main character Daisy is very headstrong. She constantly has confrontations with some of the other characters. Taeru is a womanizer and is always getting in trouble with his older brother Amanta.

  1. What are the Characters likes and dislikes-
    • It is important to include what makes the character happy, sad or embarrassed. This will show how the character will react to the situations that may occur in the books plot.
    • Also include any chronic conditions that the character may have such as allergies or disorders. The reader may relate to those conditions and be drawn closer to the character.

  1. What are the characters physical description-
    • It is important to see your character in vivid detail. Sometimes you can leave out some of the description and allow the reader to use their imagination.
    • The character may always wear a piece of jewelry, or wear a certain hat. This adds to their personality and helps to keep the character real. One of the main characters Siege wears wooden bracelets. These bracelets become an important part of the story.
    • Always include some quirks. When a character gets nervous he may begin to sing. This makes the character more true to life, and the reader may relate to this.
  1. Write a Journal-
    • Before I started Ginger High, I jotted all my ideas in a journal. This was where I was able to keep all my ideas in one place.
    • As I wrote I added to the information that I had in my journal. Sometimes a new quirk or flaw would pop into my head and I was able to use that.

Basic planning is essential to continue the plot to the end and helps the writer to create characters that are real and believable. This is one of the most important parts of writing fiction. If you put all these characteristics together you may have a bestseller.
