SUPERNATURAL SUNDAY

Last months interviews were so fun, they decided to let me come back in March! Call me Aine this time around…

Before we begin, I must remind everyone of the Moonlight Mistresses boring rule to please try and keep your responses to a PG13 atmosphere – *eye roll*. However, they haven’t seemed to care about double entendres, so let them fly!

My guests today are, Marc Weller, Tony Estabon and Serena Dammler– please, have a seat on our lovely couch! – from The End of the Road Haven Ranch in Grays Prairie, Texas. Their tale can be found in Catch Her When She Falls a novel creation by Missy Martine. It’s the sequel to her best selling novel, Table for Three.

*Settling comfortably onto the sofa, *

You three make a fine looking triad! I did a wonderful job pairing you three up if I do say so myself! Then, I just love all of my matches!

Aine: Most everyone knows how you two met up with Serena, but not many of us know how the two of you got together. Please, Tony, tell our readers how you first met Marc. Was it by your design, or his?

[Tony]: I guess you could probably say it was the US Government’s design. Marc and I went through training together at Quantico about seven years ago.

Aine: Marc, would you say it was love at first sight or did you find him repulsive?

[Marc]: (laughing) I don’t think it was love at first sight, but I definitely didn’t find him repulsive.

(Tony): Tell the lady the truth now, you were horrified when you met me.

(Marc): I wouldn’t say horrified, cowboy. I just wasn’t expecting to meet up with anyone like you.

(Tony): When I met Marc he was as straight as arrow. I don’t think he’d ever even considered being with another man in a romantic way.

(Marc): (Chuckling) I can’t deny that. I was feeling things I never thought I’d feel for anybody, much less a man, from the first day we were introduced.

Aine: Since chaotic happenstance tends to put characters like yourselves in situations where they must work together or live together for one reason or another, tell us what chaotic happenstance “forced” the two of you to work or live together. How did you both feel about this?

[Marc]: They put us as roommates and I was a goner. Hell, he ran around naked half the time trying to tempt me.

(Serena): What made you think he was trying to tempt you?

(Marc): Little things, or not so little things. He’d give me that look he has, you know the one.

(Serena): Oh, yeah, that come on, let’s get busy right now look.

(Marc): Exactly! Combine that with a naked, aroused body and what’s a guy to do?

(Tony): Apparently, nothing. As I recall you managed to avoid my looks and come-ons for several months.

Aine: [Tony], would you say that your relationship developed easily or would you say there was some reluctance?

[Tony]: (Laughing) Oh, there was plenty of reluctance. He went out of his way to prove his masculinity and sexual preferences that first month.

(Marc): (Frowning) I did no such thing.

(Tony): You most certainly did. There were 7 women in the class with us and he nailed six of them in the first four weeks. If that’s not trying to prove your masculinity I don’t know what you’d call it.

(Marc): I was merely sowing my wild oats!

(Tony): (snorted) Right, just call him Farmer Marc!

Aine: How long did it take you to know your true feelings for the other? At what point did you know, “this is the one”?

[Tony]: I think I knew from the beginning I didn’t want to be with anyone else. There was just something about him that made me want to cuddle him up and hide him away from all the hurt and ugliness in the world.

(Marc): Okay, I admit, I took a little longer to know my heart. We’d been training for a couple of months when they sent us overseas. We were going to take part in a series of field exercises in the dessert. One of the instructors there showed inappropriate interest in Tony.

(Tony): Inappropriate interest! What are you talking about? He was totally professional at all times.

(Marc): Yeah? Well then tell me, what was he trying to teach you that night behind the mess? Some kind of mouth-to-mouth espionage?

(Tony): (Grimaced) You saw that, huh? Well, if you did then you saw me push him away.

(Marc): (Grinning) Yeah, I saw everything. But that’s what made me realize that I didn’t want anybody else’s hands on you but mine.

(Serena): I better be the exception.

(Marc): Always, Sunshine! I feel the same way about you. I don’t want anybody else laying hands on you either.

Aine: [Tony], what would you say was your biggest obstacle to overcome before you could settle into a relationship with Marc?

[Tony]: Definitely our work with the DEA. They have a no-tolerance policy toward discrimination, but that doesn’t mean it’s always safe to flaunt alternative lifestyles. If we’d let our relationship become public knowledge they wouldn’t have let us work together and that’s something neither one of us wanted.

(Serena): You never told me why the two of you left the DEA.

(Tony): We were on a mission in New Mexico when our cover was blown. To this day we still don’t know how the turned us. Anyway, things got ugly and a firefight broke out when we escaped. Marc took two rounds in his right leg that shattered bones. It pretty much took him out of the spy business permanently.

(Marc): Tony told me he didn’t want to continue working for the government if I couldn’t be with him so he resigned when the kicked me out on a medical discharge. He took care of me all through re-hab and then we bought the ranch a few years later.

(Tony): And then, we had the good fortune to meet up with Rena.

(Serena): (Frowning) My name is Serena and I wish you’d lose the nickname.

Aine: This is for any of you. Would you like to thank anyone – other than me, of course – for getting you three together?

[Marc]: I guess I could thank Hector Raviroz.

(Serena): Who’s that?

(Tony): You are really crazy, cowboy. Raviroz is the one who shot him.

(Marc): Well, if he hadn’t shot me, we might still be running cases for the Feds. His bullet led straight to us playing house.

(Serena): Then I guess I’d have to thank Eric Abernathy. If he hadn’t beat the crap out of me I’d never have met the two of you.

(Tony): We went to Oregon as a favor to John Millerson. He was Eric’s parole officer and wanted us to find him and bring him back to Texas. Instead, we found Rena and brought her back.

(Marc): We definitely got the better end of that deal.

Aine: I know our readers have enjoyed learning about you three so far, but I’m getting a little bored, so I’m going to heat things up. Serena, how would you end this sentence, "I wish Tony and Mark would _____?" *leans forward to eagerly hear your response*

[Serena]: Leave the door open when they take a shower together and let me watch them sometimes. I think that would be totally hot.

(Tony): Princess, all you had to do was ask. I’ll pull you up a chair for a front row seat next time.

Aine: [Marc], would you prefer to give [Serena] a bubble bath or a back massage? Why?

[Marc]: That’s a no-brainer. I’d give a back massage over a bubble bath any day. Just thinking about my oiled up hands sliding all over that silky skin, up and down her curves, makes it hard to sit still in this chair.

Aine: How many of you remember that old show, The Newlywed Game? Well, these next questions are going to help us play a similar game. Let’s see how well you two know each other. [Tony], what would [Serena] say is your aphrodisiac? *waggles eyebrows*

[Tony]: She has to know that licking me behind the ear turns me on faster than anything else.

Aine: [Serena], did he correctly guess your answer? How would you have answered that question?

[Serena]: Truthfully, I was going to say slow dancing in a candlelit room. That always seems to get his motor running.

(Marc): They’re both full of it. Rena’s turned on by slow dancing in the dark, almost uncontrollably. As for Tony, what really gets him going is to watch me with Rena. He’s a bit of a voyeur, and the longer he watches the hotter he gets. Now me, I happen to be turned on by touch. A simple foot or shoulder rub has me acting like a cave man.

Aine: [Wow, I’m getting excited just listening to you.]*sits back in his chair* [Serena], what would [Tony] say is a spot guaranteed to drive you crazy with passion? Is he correct in that assumption?

[Serena]: He thinks my neck and breasts are the best places to caress and kiss me to turn me on. (leans closer) He’s wrong, though. The base of my spine, in the middle of my back, right above my tail bone should be his target. Sometimes he licks, or caresses me there and I go from Idle to Full Throttle in a matter of seconds.

(Tony): I think I’m going to just let this one go and agree with her. My mamma didn’t raise no fool and sometimes it doesn’t pay to disagree.

Aine: Wise answer! *readjusts his position in the chair* It’s time to cool things off just a tad. Serena, as far as you know, what is Marc & Tony’s idea of a perfect date?

[Serena]: Packing a picnic that includes chicken, éclairs, and a bottle of bubbly water. Then, they saddle up the horses and we take this feast out toward the swimming hole and spend the afternoon lounging, taking short walks and making love on an old, soft blanket.

Aine: Guys, is she correct? If not, what is your idea of a perfect date?

[Tony]: I think she pretty much nailed it. We’ve spent some pretty good times out by the stream.

(Marc): You’ll get no arguments from me.

Aine: Marc, your turn in the hot seat. What is Serena’s idea of a perfect date?

[Marc]: That’s easy. She likes to get all gussied up and have us take her to the La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant in Gun Barrell. There’s nothing that woman likes better than Mexican food. Then, she’ll want to head over to the Rancher’s Club to listen to their live music. She hates line dancing so she makes us slow dance to all the songs.

Aine: Serena, is he correct? If not, what is your idea of a perfect date?

[Serena]: He’s mostly correct. If we could find a place that had music from the 70’s I’d be in seventh heaven.

Aine: In your adventures, journeys or travels, have the three of you had the chance to have the “perfect date,” or the closest you could get to one? Where did you go and what did you do?

[Tony]: For the three of us it was the day we taught Rena how to ride. We’d picked up a basket of food from Millie’s Café and drove her out to the swimming hole. We had a couple of our hands saddle the horses and leave them out there so it could be a surprise.

As for Marc and I, it was quite a bit different. After we left the DEA we took a vacation before settling here in the states. Our most memorable romantic date was in Paris. We’d walked along the Seine and took a boatload of pictures of Notre Dame, when we came across this little café. We stopped and ordered a bottle of wine and some sandwiches and while we were there this street artist came by and sketched us. He was so good you could see the desire in our eyes right there in his drawing. It was the first night we used the “L” word.

[Serena]:You guys never told me that story. They have that picture framed and hanging in our bedroom.

Aine: You guys are going to have to have another drawing done with the three of you because I can see the love shining in all your eyes. ] I want to switch gears just a bit. March has close connections to Ireland, and as many of us acknowledge, Ireland is steeped in myths and mysticism, as are many Native American tribal beliefs. Do any of you believe in this type of mysticism? Have you had any experiences that helped you develop these beliefs?

[Serena]: No, I don’t believe in mystic things and I’ve certainly never had anything in my life happen to change my mind. I used to pray as a child for my mother to find some way to get in touch with me after she died but of course those prayers were always in vain.

[Tony]: I’ve always believed in Native American myths. I have a series of tribal tattoos on my back that I got after experiencing my first Spirit Walk. A couple of years before I joined the DEA I lived in New Mexico. A good friend of mine was a full blooded Pueblo chieftain. He set me up to do a Spirit Walk. He had me fast for two days, and then put me in a buffalo skin tent with a small fire inside. He burned some type of powder that caused a silky type smoke that I inhaled leaving me kind of lethargic and susceptible to my innermost thoughts. During that time I had all kinds of dreams including the one that led me to the DEA and my future with Marc.

(Marc): What a load of hogwash! I don’t believe in anything mystic, but I do believe he probably had you smoking a little weed there, big guy.

Aine: I guess one man’s weed is another man’s vision. Do you believe in fate and destiny or are most things just a happenstance of coincidence? Why do you feel the way you do?

[Serena]: I think we all just live as victims of coincidence. I don’t believe it was fate that brought the three of us together, and I can’t believe it was fate that let Eric take out his frustrations on me.

[Marc]: I’d have to agree with Serena. Fate is pretty mystical and I don’t believe that our destinies are pre-determined and that nothing we do can change what fate has decreed for us.

(Tony): I’d have to disagree. I believe we’re all fated for certain things but I also think that we can help shape and guide our own destinies. I think we were fated to meet up with Serena, one way or another. We pushed the envelope, so to speak, by deciding to take on the bounty hunting job and by bringing her home with us.

Aine: Sounds like an argument for another time. .Where do the three of you see yourselves in 5 years?

[Tony]: Relaxing on our ranch with a bunch of little cowboys and cowgirls running around.

[Marc]: Yeah, that sounds about right. We need at least four little cowpokes to make a decent size family.

(Serena) Okay, I see myself as exhausted. (laughing) But it’s a happy exhaustion. I see us settled, with family and friends coming to visit and a big family to love.

Aine: I’m sorry folks, but that’s all the time we have for today. Thanks to Serena, Marc and Tony for joining us today and giving us some great answers. We hope you’ll check out their story, Catch Her When She Falls.

Serena Dammler is recovering from a savage beating and needs protection. Cowboys and lovers Marc Weller and Tony Estabon are taking jobs as bounty-hunters, and their newest assignment is to capture her attacker and return him to Texas. They take one look at Serena’s fragile beauty and decide she’d be the perfect third to their family.

Serena’s always dreamed of catching herself a rich man, and she’d do just about anything to make that dream come true. She’s not going to allow herself to fall in love with her two cowboy protectors, no matter how sexy they are.

Marc and Tony want Serena as their third, but they want her love to be real and not based on their bank accounts. So what will it hurt if they take her to a little cabin on their ranch and pretend to be simple cowboys?

Excerpt:

“What room is Serena Dammler in?” Marc smiled at the elderly woman sitting at the information desk in the lobby of Pioneer Hospital. His fingers drummed impatiently on the counter while she pulled up the information on her computer.

“She’s on the second floor, room two twenty-one.” She pointed down the hall. “The elevators are down there on the left.”

“Thank you,” he mumbled and motioned for Tony to follow him. Silently, they entered the elevator and punched the button for the second floor. “After we talk to Ms. Dammler, we should drive by the sheriff’s office. We don’t wanna be busting heads with the local fuzz.”

Tony grunted, but didn’t say anything. The doors opened and together the two men walked over to the nurse’s desk and looked around. Marc didn’t see anybody at first, and then voices drifted out from a small room behind the desk.

“Dr. Farin’s not happy about having her admitted to his service. I think he avoids making rounds on her whenever he can.”

“Well, what do you expect?” The unknown female snorted. “It’s hard to feel sorry for somebody that finally got what they deserved.”

“You really believe Serena deserved to get beaten up? I went to school with her, and she’s not so bad.”

“That’s your opinion, but I guarantee the rest of the women in this town don’t feel the same. I still remember when Randy fell all over himself fixing her car last year. For free, no less. She came around the shop in her skimpy clothes, practically drooling all over him.”

“Do you think he slept with her?”

“He always claimed I was imagining things, but I never really believed him. Hell, Joseph told us all about the things she was into.”

Marc had heard enough. “Excuse me,” he called out loudly. He waited for one of the women to stick her head out of the room.

“Oh, sorry, I didn’t see you there.” An attractive blond woman dressed in pink scrubs walked over to the counter, followed closely by a brunette who could have passed for her twin. Both women were young and had badges on their uniforms identifying them as Evie and Alice.

Tony leaned close to Marc’s ear and whispered. “Stepford nurses.”

Camouflaging his snort with a cough, Marc pulled out his notebook and wrote down the names of the two nurses. “Which way is room two twenty-one?”

The women glanced briefly at each other and then the blonde spoke up, nodding toward the end of the hall. “It’s the next to the last room down there on the right.”

The brunette smirked. “Are you friends of the patient?”

The emphasis on the word friends wasn’t lost on Marc. He narrowed his eyes and put his notebook aside. “No, we’ve never met the lady. Let me ask you something, Alice. Have you and Evie ever heard of HIPPA laws?”

Alice hunched her shoulders and looked down at her feet. “Of course we have. Why do you ask?”

“Because you’ve violated patient confidentiality about a dozen times since we’ve been standing here.” Without another word, Marc walked away with Tony following close behind.

Just as they reached the end of the hall, the door to room two twenty-one opened, and a tall man wearing a law-enforcement uniform stepped out. His name plaque identified him as Sheriff Burtram. Marc stopped and eyed the man critically. “Sheriff Burtram, I’m Marc Weller, and this is my partner Tony Estabon. We were sent by the Houston PD to track and retrieve one Eric Abernathy. I understand he had an altercation with one of your citizens Friday evening.”

Sheriff Burtram glanced from Marc to Tony and back again. “According to Serena’s statement, she practically invited him up here and then refused to give him the information he wanted when he showed up.” He chuckled. “Understandably, he was a mite pissed off after coming all this way.”

Marc gritted his teeth, struggling to control his temper. “Sheriff, you do realize that Eric Abernathy is a convicted felon now presently guilty of parole violation as well as wanted for a new list of charges?”

“Yeah, I know all about the boy’s background. His conviction was for malicious mischief. That hardly qualifies him for leg irons.”

“The man beat a woman severely enough for her to be hospitalized,” Tony said with a growl.

“Yes, I know the details. He had a little tiff with his wife, and he paid the ultimate price. Doesn’t make him a habitual criminal.”

“Except that now he’s gone and put another woman in the hospital. Most folks in law enforcement would call him a serial offender.” Marc couldn’t believe the attitude of the man.

“Well, son, let’s not forget that this little lady invited him to the party. She had an agenda all her own and tried to get him to do her dirty work for her. This time, things just happened to go wrong.”

“Sheriff, have you got your men out looking for Eric?” Marc asked.

“Yes, they’ve been given a description and told to keep their eyes open. But, I’ll tell you the same thing I told Cass. That boy’s long gone by now. He skedaddled out of there as soon as he heard my sirens, and he’s probably still running as fast as he can.” He crossed his arms across his chest. “Are you planning on going in to talk to Serena?”

“Yes, we need to get her statement before we do anything else. Unless there’s some reason you don’t want us talking to her.” Marc just wanted to wipe the smug smile off the asshole’s face.

“No, not at all. You go right ahead, but you best be careful. Serena will be all over you two like white on rice. She’s partial to young, handsome men.” Laughing, he walked away.

Tony sighed deeply. “Let’s get this over with so we can get the hell out of here.”

SUPERNATURAL SUNDAY

Please welcome Luxie Ryder into the moonlight. Love your name, Luxie. To learn more about Luxie join her at her website where you can learn more about Luxie and her books! Now, to the good stuff…

GRACEN: Do you have a movie that you must watch every Halloween? What's your favorite scary movie? Do you have a favorite scary character or character type?

LUXIE: ‘Halloween’ is always a favorite! Jamie Lee Curtis, the scream queen, can’t be beaten. The soundtrack, the atmosphere and that jerky, handheld camera draws me in every time and even though I know where the scares are; I still jump out of my skin!

My favorite scary characters are from the teen slasher movies I saw when I was younger. I remember seeing a Friday the 13th (part two) and A Nightmare on Elm Street double bill at the movies on time, and being absolutely terrified! Jason and Freddie haunted me for days afterwards. You never get over your first fright night!

GRACEN: Do you dress up for Halloween? If so, what will you be dressed up as this year? What was your all-time most favorite costume that you ever wore? Why?

LUXIE: I have dressed up for Halloween and I loved it! I had this fabulous vampy dress one year in black velvet with a jagged hem and a blood red collar. I won’t be dressing up this year (as far as I know – no invites have surfaced yet) but I would love to.

GRACEN: Oh, that sounds like an awesome costume! Are you superstitious? Do you find yourself knocking on wood or throwing salt over your shoulder? If not one of these two, what is your superstition?

LUXIE: I do knock on wood and throw salt over my shoulder. I love the folklore surrounding superstitions – such as the one where you have to smash your empty eggshells or else witches will go to sea in them and sink ships – but I don’t practice any except the ones I mentioned.

GRACEN: Interesting folklore about empty eggshells. Never heard of it before and now I'm wondering how many ships I'm responsible for sinking! ;-) Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you ever had a ghostly encounter and tell us about it?

LUXIE: No, I don’t believe in ghosts but I DO believe in the power of the human mind and its ability to convince you that you are seeing something that isn’t there! In some ways, I find that a little more terrifying!

GRACEN: Tell us 3 funny or strange things that happened to you, or someone you know, on past Halloweens?

LUXIE: Well the first story comes from my teens and that Horror Double Bill a friend and I watched at the cinema. We were cowering in our seats, clutching on to each other…when someone slammed the exit door at the back of the room! I am not exaggerating when I say that the staff almost had to scrape me and Anna off the ceiling. We screamed SO loudly that everyone in the cinema was in hysterics.

Another scary movie moment (I’m such a sucker for them) was when hubby and I saw Final Destination. Again, the bit with Tara Reid and the Greyhound bus had me jumping out of my skin! That time, I lurched so far back in my seat, that I banged my head off the knee cap of the girl behind me! Painful and embarrassing.

My favorite Halloween ever was the year I went to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show live at my local theater. The girls and I all wore corsets and torn stockings and gothic make up to the show – as did everyone else, guys included. What a fun, funny night!

GRACEN: LOL Thanks for sharing these! If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?

LUXIE: I’d like to be a vampire, but only for a short time. I wouldn’t be able to kill anyone but I’d love to know what it felt like to be that sexy and powerful.

GRACEN: Swashbuckling pirates like Johnny Depp are sexy, but e-pirates are not. How do you handle e-pirates in your writing world? Do you have any advice or wish to share any experience with other writers? Anything you wish to say to e-pirates in general?

LUXIE: e-pirates are thieves. There is no other word for them. I almost feel that the term ‘pirates’ minimizes what they do, but I accept that it’s as good a word as any. New technology is developing all the time and, just as those who stole music suddenly found themselves with a multi-million dollar lawsuit on their hands, so will e-pirates one day.

GRACEN: That lawsuit can't come soon enough in my opinion! Now, let’s get to your writing, Luxie…Why the paranormal genre? What was the draw for you?

LUXIE: I love the paranormal genre for many reasons. I like that you can create new worlds, characters and circumstances and let your imagination take free reign. Paranormal romance, specifically, provides the opportunity to write some amazingly sexy scenes and situations.

GRACEN: If you could describe your paranormal writing with a word or phrase, what would it be? Please be creative and look beyond words like vampire, werewolf, etc., and delve into the core of your writing to tell us what word or phrase you want readers to take with them when they've finished reading your story.

LUXIE: I like to think I tell realistic tales of ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances.

GRACEN: Do you prefer playing tricks on people or bestowing treats? Does that show through in your writing? If so, how?

LUXIE: What an interesting question! You’ve made me realize that I like terrorizing my characters! But there is always a treat at the end.

GRACEN: LOL I love dishing out terror on my characters too! *Mwhahahahah* Who decides what creatures you write about, you or your muse? What kind of influence do you have over your story, or is the muse always the one stirring the cauldron?

LUXIE: I decide and I keep my muse in check! My muse is a dark, naughty little madam and I often have to rein her in because I am not sure people want to read some of the stuff she comes up with!

GRACEN: What was the creature/paranormal character that you had the most fun creating and why? Who—to you—was the sexiest character you wrote and why?

LUXIE: Well of course, Ethan Butler is by far the sexiest character I have shared with the readers in one of my paranormal novels. When we meet him, he is already a huge, handsome hunk of a man and then he is turned into a vampire! Irresistible!

I had the most fun creating Mama Susu from my novel Mama’s Charm. She is a voodoo priestess from Haiti and nobody knows how old she is, save to say she is ancient. She is a little bit naughty and the locals are terrified of her but she has a soft spot for the heroine Martine. The old girl still has an eye for the fellas - as our rugged hero Wade finds out when he wakes up naked on her kitchen table. Great fun!

GRACEN: Ooo…Mama Susu sounds like a fun gal! If you had the opportunity to meet just one of your characters in real life, who would it be and why? Which of your characters would you never want to meet under any circumstance and why?

LUXIE: I’d love to meet Ethan from Sacrifice or Wade from Mama’s Charm. They are both inspired by men I go weak at the knees for in real life. They are tall, strong, ruggedly handsome (no pretty boys here please) who will do anything to save the woman they love.

The character/s I wouldn’t like to meet are Clairvius Douyon - the evil bokor from Mama’s Charm. He’s a nasty little man who isn’t as powerful as Mama Susu but still causes major problems for the hero and heroine – and Silas from my novel Sacrifice. He’s the head of a local nest of vampires that control New Orleans by catering to the peccadilloes of the city’s politicians.

GRACEN: Thanks so much for joining us in the moonlight, Luxie! All the best of success with your books!

All Hallie Matheson wants is someone to rent her apartment. What she gets is the handsome and wealthy, Ethan Butler. They hit it off instantly and Hallie thinks she has found a lifelong friend, until she tries to explore the sexual tension between them. Ethan rejects her and then avoids her for months, leaving Hallie confused and hurt.

Until one fateful night she finds Ethan collapsed and near death on her door-step.

Ethan has spent the last few years investigating vampires, until a sudden attack ends his mortal life. Now, he has even more reason to avoid Hallie, despite his desire to have her. Her continuous presence sparks a desperate hunger within him he can no longer control. No sooner has their affair begun when his worst fears are realized.

Desperate to do anything to keep her alive, Ethan vows to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Excerpt:

Hallie had wiped away her tears by the time he cracked open the door, but he could still see the tracks on her face and the redness around her pretty green eyes. She’d lost a few pounds in the last couple of weeks, evident from the way the sweat pants that used to hug her lovely curves now hung loosely from her hips. Another thing he felt responsible for.

“H…hi,” she said, her voice still husky from crying. “Can I come in?”

Ethan wanted to tell her to stay away, but as he struggled to find the right words without causing her more pain, his delay in answering clearly upset her. Her beautiful green eyes sparkled with unshed tears. It physically pained him knowing he was the cause of her sorrow.

He moved out of the doorway, gesturing for her to enter, and took a last deep breath of air before her scent and taste assaulted his senses.

“Thanks.” Hallie took a seat, perching on the edge of the very sofa where he’d almost ended her life. Ethan didn’t join her. Instead, he remained standing, watching her silently. The highly sensitive awareness coursing through his body warned him she was more than a little angry. She was livid.

“Now I can see you’re perfectly okay. Do you mind telling me why the hell you’ve been so mean to me? I took care of you, only to find you had disappeared in the middle of the night, and I haven’t laid eyes on you since.” She stood up abruptly and moved towards him, her finger jabbing at his face. “The least you could do is thank me for helping your sorry ass!”

Ethan took a step back, unsure if he could handle it should she touch him. “I sent you some flowers. Didn’t you get—”

“Yes, I got them.” She sighed and the anger drained from her face. “But that’s hardly the same as seeing with my own eyes that you were alive. Ethan, I truly thought you were dying.”

“I’m sorry, really I am. But as you can see, I’m fine.”

He moved a little closer to the door, his hand extended as if to grab the knob. Any hopes that she’d accept his flippant answer and leave him to his misery were dashed when she walked back to the sofa and sat down again.

“Are you going to tell me what happened?”

“Why?”

She smiled, but it didn’t reach her tired eyes. “Besides the fact you owe me an explanation, I’m a lone woman living in a house with a man I don’t really know as well as I thought I did. If you have drug or alcohol problems—”

Ethan swallowed his offense at her words. “I don’t drink, and as for drugs, do I look like an addict to you?”

Hallie shook her head, a shy smile lighting her features. “Not really. You do look well, though. Amazingly so, considering how bad you looked two weeks ago…” Her voice drifted off and she seemed to lose her train of thought as her gaze crawled over him slowly. Ethan tensed and turned away.

“So, what happened?” she asked, the weariness back in her tone.

“I don’t know the details.” That much wasn’t a lie at least. “I was researching a story at this club and the last thing I remember is a young Creole woman—”

Hallie cast her gaze downward. “Did you…you know…with her?”

“Have sex with her? No.”

The blush crawling over Hallie’s cheeks almost made him growl. He didn’t need to be reminded that her warm, sweet blood lay mere millimeters below the surface of her skin.

“So what did she do to you?”

He shrugged, feigning ignorance. “I can only guess what happened but it doesn’t matter now anyway. As you can see, there’s no lasting damage.” Hallie fell silent. If he was very lucky, she’d let it drop. But since when had he ever been lucky?

“I’m sorry Ethan, but that’s bullshit. You’re a reporter for God’s sake. Do you really expect me to believe you didn’t try to find out what she did to you?”

“Like I said, it doesn’t matter—”

“Like hell it doesn’t! All kinds of shady stuff goes down in New Orleans. How do you know she didn’t poison you? DocFletcher said—”

“Whatever he said was wrong.”

“So you do know what it is.” Hallie got to her feet and closed in on him, her voice a gentle plea. “Tell me.”

She reached out to grip his t-shirt but he stopped her, wrapping a hand around each of her wrists and held her away. Hallie gasped from the contact, obviously shocked at how cold he felt. For him, her skin almost burned his palms as her heat radiated through his flesh.

“Please, I need to know,” she whispered.

“It would only frighten you.”

Ethan dropped his gaze, unable to look into her eyes while they silently begged him to open up to her. Instead, he gazed at her trembling lips, groaning when the sight of them caused a hard jolt of desire to course through him. Ethan let go of her and tried to move away but he stopped, frozen with dread when her fingertips caressed his cheek.

Ethan felt her heart thud with frenzy and she sucked in shallow, rasping breaths. He stared at her face, then her sensuous lips slightly parted as she tilted her head back, telling him without words she wanted to be kissed. Ethan drank the sight of her in, promising himself this was all he would take…but then he caught another aroma…one he couldn’t resist.

Hallie’s arousal perfumed the air, assaulting his senses without warning. The tiny amount of restraint Ethan had left, snapped, replaced by the hungry entity within him. He couldn’t control himself any longer, not when the intoxicating woman tormented his basic desires. He reached out and cupped her jaw, lifting her chin as his mouth descended.

Hallie sank into him, moaning softly when his lips slid across hers. Her hands brushed his hair and she tugged, trying to pull him closer, her body pressed against his. Her warm, soft flesh burned into him, even through his t-shirt, and he craved more of her heat. Ethan wrapped his arms around her back and trapped her against his torso, thrusting his groin into hers in response to the way she writhed against his erection.

He only intended to give her a little of what she asked for while taking a taste for himself, but he was unprepared for the spike of lust spearing through him when her tongue slid boldly into his mouth. An image of her, naked and writhing beneath him, leapt into his mind and he knew he no longer had the strength to stop.

Hallie pulled away first, her breath ragged as she released a throaty, self conscious laugh…but when she looked up at him, a hair-raising scream tumbled from her lips, as she stared in horror at his mouth.

Ethan brought his hands to his lips, wiping them quickly to check for her blood. He wiped again and winced as something sharp pierced the back of his knuckles.

Fangs. He’d forgotten about the fangs.

Voodoo and betrayal in the heart of New Orleans. Can their love be saved by Mama's Charm?

Excerpt:

Did he know me? I squirmed a little under his intense scrutiny, sure he had never been a client. I wouldn’t have forgotten him—if only for his looks if not his strange mannerisms. Still, something lurked behind his gaze that unnerved me. If I didn’t know better, I would swear he didn’t like me much. I’d be happier when the session was over. Going through my usual routine, I gave my name.

He repeated it, making it sound dirty somehow. ‘Martine. Is that Creole?’

I nodded, uncomfortable with the slant he put on the words. Deciding to ignore it, I continued. ‘Usually, people tell me what they want to know, and we see where the cards take us, ok?’

He shuffled in his seat before fixing me with a look. Again, I knew he wouldn’t be entirely truthful, but it was his money, and if he wanted to waste it, it made no difference to me. ‘I think my wife is seeing someone.’ His voice had trailed off as he finished speaking, sounding rougher, tinged with something that sounded like sadness, but could have been anger.

I got up and lit some candles—a blue one for him, to bring peace and happiness and a black one for me, to absorb the negative energy I could feel coming from him. I wasn’t exactly nervous but couldn’t shake the edgy feeling I had about the guy.

Flicking a quick glance over my shoulder, I found his eyes on my ass. Turning back to him as I cleared my throat, his perusal continued, inching slowly up my body, finally reaching my face. Any hope I had of seeing contrition or embarrassment at his being caught mentally undressing me was chased away by the slight smirk he gave before dropping his gaze.

His story wasn’t ringing true but the natural intuition I always relied on failed me. All I knew for sure was that a man, concerned about a cheating wife, didn’t come to a tarot card reader and look at her in the way he had just looked at me.

I settled in my seat, determined to get the reading over with as quickly as possible. Lifting the damp hair from my neck once again, I felt the fabric of my dress strain across my breasts and knew without needing to check that he would have noticed. Appallingly, my nipples hardened at the thought and I abruptly dropped my arms, cursing my own stupidity. Eyes averted, I spent a few moments shuffling the deck while telling him to concentrate on what he wanted to know. Offering him the cards, I told him to split them as he asked the question out loud. Nothing happened.

Having no choice but to look at him again, my breath caught at the change in his expression. The cold, dark eyes that had first greeted me now seemed larger and much warmer. The hard line of his mouth had relaxed and he looked slightly flushed. His delay in answering had been intentional. He’d wanted me to look at him.

I could feel myself blushing under his stare, feeling totally out of my depth. I didn’t know what he wanted or why he affected me this way. And he knew he affected me. His posture had relaxed and the hands that had been rigid on the table now smoothed down over his thighs as he kept his eyes on me all the while.

I felt a trickle of sweat start to roll down the side of my neck. Needing to wipe it away, I didn’t move, afraid again of making him look at my body but more afraid of how I would react when, not if, he did. I felt it slip slowly downwards onto my collarbone, pooling there for a second before it continued, as I knew it would, down my chest and under the neckline of my dress.

His voice made me jump. ‘It’s sure hot in here. Do you mind if I take off my over-shirt?’

His gaze riveted to the spot where the trail of sweat had disappeared inside my clothing, making it clear he had been following its path. I shook my head at his question, trying without success to refocus my attention on the cards.

My eyes were drawn back to him as the grubby v-neck t-shirt stretched taut across his chest. He shrugged off the shirt to reveal sweaty, heavily muscled arms that rippled as he moved, causing my breath to catch in my throat. His musky scent reached my nostrils and wasn’t entirely unpleasant, but it was entirely male. An ache began between my legs and I willed myself to ignore it. Sure, he was one hell of a man but that didn’t explain my reaction to him. Maybe the sexual drought of the past year caused me to squirm in my seat at the nearness of a good-looking guy? Whatever it was, I wished it would stop.

‘Should I cut them now?’ I only realized that I had been staring at him dumbly when his voice broke through my trance. I nodded, grateful for the distraction of the cards as I held them out to him. Placing a large hand under mine to steady it, he cut the deck. My skin burned where he touched me but I refused to analyze it, concentrating instead on the small amount of cards he had chosen. Men were quite anal about such things and often struggled to cut them exactly in half, like it mattered.

I found my voice. ‘You didn’t ask the question.’

Twilight Thursday

Please welcome Stacey Espino into the moonlight. Join Stacey at her website where you can learn more about Stacey and her books! Now, to the good stuff…

GRACEN: Do you have a movie that you must watch every Halloween? What's your favorite scary movie? Do you have a favorite scary character or character type?

STACEY: I’m a big chicken! Seriously. I can’t watch scary movies.

GRACEN: Do you dress up for Halloween? If so, what will you be dressed up as this year? What was your all-time most favorite costume that you ever wore? Why?

STACEY: Nope. I don’t dress up, but I’ve always wanted to dress up in one of those sexy costumes for women-only. Maybe I still will…

GRACEN: You should go for it, Stacey! Are you superstitious? Do you find yourself knocking on wood or throwing salt over your shoulder? If not one of these two, what is your superstition?

STACEY: I try not to be superstitious. I like to believe I control my own destiny.

GRACEN: Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you ever had a ghostly encounter and tell us about it?

STACEY: I don’t think I believe in ghosts, but I believe in angels. I could swear I saw an angel when I was fourteen, but I’ll never know for sure ;)

GRACEN: Tell us 3 funny or strange things that happened to you, or someone you know, on past Halloweens?

STACEY: I’m too old. My memories only go back so far ;)

GRACEN: LOL Same here on the memories. If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?

STACEY: A shapeshifter would be cool. To enjoy two worlds, two selves, would make life more interesting.

GRACEN: Swashbuckling pirates like Johnny Depp are sexy, but e-pirates are not. How do you handle e-pirates in your writing world? Do you have any advice or wish to share any experience with other writers? Anything you wish to say to e-pirates in general?

STACEY: Of course, I hate the pirates, like every other hard-working author. My books are usually pirated on their release day. I’ve learned to ignore it because no matter how much effort you put in to stopping them, it continues. I hope there will be a way to track and stop them in the future. If someone likes to read, they should pay for the privilege.

GRACEN: I agree with you, Stacey! My personal wish is that one of them has something stolen that they've poured everything into. Eps...Sorry for my Karma violence! Now, let’s get to your writing, Stacey…Why the paranormal genre? What was the draw for you?

STACEY: I LOVE reading paranormal romance and urban fantasy, so writing in the genre was a natural move for me. There are no rules that can’t be overwritten, and love can last forever.

GRACEN: If you could describe your paranormal writing with a word or phrase, what would it be? Please be creative and look beyond words like vampire, werewolf, etc., and delve into the core of your writing to tell us what word or phrase you want readers to take with them when they've finished reading your story.

STACEY: Unique demon world.

GRACEN: Do you prefer playing tricks on people or bestowing treats? Does that show through in your writing? If so, how?

STACEY: Okay. I like to trick. I love keeping readers on the edge of their seats as I pull them into my world.

GRACEN: Who decides what creatures you write about, you or your muse? What kind of influence do you have over your story, or is the muse always the one stirring the cauldron?

STACEY: For my Immortal Love series, I wanted to create a unique breed of demons. I didn’t want the usual vamps for shifters, but something different. My newest series is about wolf shifters.

GRACEN: What was the creature/paranormal character that you had the most fun creating and why? Who—to you—was the sexiest character you wrote and why?

STACEY: I love my Fear Demons! They’re all sexy and so different. How can I pick? Maybe I’ll pick Javen from Fearless Love (Immortal Love, #2) Gotta love a damaged alpha male.

GRACEN: Damaged alpha males are always the sexiest! If you had the opportunity to meet just one of your characters in real life, who would it be and why? Which of your characters would you never want to meet under any circumstance and why?

STACEY: I’d love to meet any of my demons, cowboys or wolves! They’re all super yummy. I wouldn’t want to meet Ken, Grace’s ex-husband from SAVING GRACE. He was a jerk!

GRACEN: Thanks so much for joining us today, Stacey! All the best of success!

Blurb for Fearless Desires (Immortal Love, #1):

Delius never asked for his fate, but in a world that placed all its faith in prophecy, he would be a fool to challenge it. He felt like a parasite, forced to live off the fear of humans.
From the first time Delius became trapped in Selina's mind and seduced by her provocative thoughts, he was drawn to her. She was a mystery that turned into an obsession. Yet, for them to have a life together, Delius would have to go against his own race that demanded he fulfill his destiny. One that did not include Selina.

~~~~~
GRACEN: Do you make resolutions for the New Year? Why or why not? If so, please share one or more of them with us!
KARENNA: I don’t make resolutions, exactly. However, I do set goals for myself that I hope to reach in the new year. This year’s goals are mostly about writing, and include having 8 new contracts by the end of the year. I like to aim high.
GRACEN: Now that the busy holiday time is over, what do you do to recharge?
KARENNA: I just take a deep breath and remind myself that it only happens once a year. Then I dive back into writing.
GRACEN: Do you have any holiday memories from 2009 that you would like to share with us?
KARENNA: This was the first holiday season since my daughters and I moved in with my fiance, so it was definitely a special time. We didn’t really do anything special; it was just being together.
GRACEN: What area of the country/world are you from? What are the average temperatures where you are? What type of clothing would most residents be wearing today? What tips do you have for people to “survive” the weather where you are?
KARENNA: I’m from New England, so it gets pretty chilly in the winter here. Average temperatures at this time of year are in the lower to mid thirties where I live, and in the summer they’re probably around 75 to 80. Today, people are bundled up in jackets, scarves, etc. As for surviving the weather, in winter, keep warm!
GRACEN: Do you have any favorite outside hobbies? Can you perform any of these hobbies right now? If not, why not, and is weather a factor?
KARENNA: I don’t really have any outside hobbies. I prefer to stay indoors.
GRACEN: Do you prefer your hot tub inside the house or outside the house? Why?
KARENNA: I wish I had a hot tub! If I did, I’d have to say inside, because as I said above, I prefer to stay indoors.
GRACEN: If you could be any character/creature, who/what would it be and why?
KARENNA: A mermaid, because I love the ocean.
GRACEN: Now, let’s get to your writing…Karenna, why the erotic romance/erotica genre? What was the draw for you?
KARENNA: I started writing erotic romance as a challenge from a friend, who dared me to write something that showed sex in a positive way. When I finished the scene, I was surprised at how good it was, and I was hooked on writing it.
GRACEN: If you could describe your writing with a word or phrase, what would it be? Please look beyond words like hot, sexy, etc., and delve into the core of your writing to tell us what word or phrase you want readers to take with them when they've finished reading your story.
KARENNA: Thought provoking.
GRACEN: Do the holidays disrupt your writing schedule? If so, how tough is it to get yourself back in writing mode and what have you found that seems to help?
KARENNA: They do a little bit, in that I have to spend more time with family during the holidays, but since I don’t have a set writing schedule, it isn’t hard to adapt.
GRACEN: Do you prefer hot chocolate with marshmallows or a hot toddy? Does that show through in your writing? If so, how?
KARENNA: Hot chocolate with marshmellows, definitely. And I think it probably does show through, because my writing is warm and comforting rather than hot and spicy.
GRACEN: Who decides what characters/creatures you write about, you or your muse? What kind of influence do you have over your story, or is the muse always the one pouring the soap in the Jacuzzi?
KARENNA: I have a pretty good collaborative relationship with my muse, fortunately. We spend a lot of time chatting about what’s going to happen and why, and if we disagree we usually find a way around it.
GRACEN: What creature/character did you have the most fun creating and why?
KARENNA: I’d say I had the most fun creating Alec in Beginner’s Luck, because he’s based on my fiance and it was interesting to see how close I came to his real personality. It was fun putting in little mannerisms and phrases that my fiance uses, too.
GRACEN: If you had the opportunity to meet just one of your characters in real life, who would it be and why? Which of your characters would you never want to meet under any circumstance and why?
KARENNA: I’d like to meet Boreas, the Greek god of the North Wind, who’s a character in my short story Who Can See the Wind, because he’s a god and is one of the few characters I’ve written who isn’t based on someone I know. I wouldn’t want to meet Nyssa’s boss in the same story, because he’s a predatory jerk.
BLURB:
Courtney Southard moved from a small town to the big city expecting fun and adventure, but has found neither and wants to go home. Tanner Wohl is still recovering from a broken heart and doesn’t want to open up to anyone. When an attempted mugging brings the two together, can love overcome their fear?
EXCERPT:
“Want to go wading?” he called back over his shoulder.
She gave up trying to figure out what had upset him and hurried to catch up with him. “I don’t know,” she said. “I’d feel kind of weird. It’s a kids’ wading pool.”
“Other adults are in there.” He knelt and untied his sneakers, then slipped them and his socks off and rolled up his pants. “Come on. What are you, chicken?”
“No.” She watched as he stood and took a few steps into the water. What the hell. She couldn’t just stand here. If he could do it, so could she. Even if people did give her weird looks.
Tanner apparently had no concerns about what people might think. He turned and looked at her for a moment, then waded farther into the pond. Crouching, he scooped up some water in his cupped hands, then dumped it over his own head.
Startled, Courtney broke into laughter, as did several children who played near Tanner. “Hey, dude, you’re wet!” one of the kids shouted.
“It’s a hot day.” Tanner reverted to the monotone he’d used when Courtney met him, but even with some distance between them, Courtney could see the mischievous twinkle in his eyes. He’d soaked himself to entertain her, she was sure.
He walked back to her. “Figured I could use some cooling off. How about you?”
“All set, thanks,” Courtney assured him.
She spotted one of the kids sneaking up behind him, but pretended not to see. Tanner seemed unaware. The little boy, who looked about eight or nine, waited until he was so close, Tanner’s shadow fell over him, then splashed.
Tanner jumped when the water hit his back and whirled around. For a moment, Courtney thought he was angry at the boy, and from the frightened look in the boy’s eye, he thought so as well. But Tanner’s chuckles rolled over the pond, and he gently flipped a few droplets of water in the boy’s direction. “You looking for a water fight?”
“I just thought you needed to get wetter,” the boy said innocently.
With Tanner’s back to her, Courtney couldn’t resist. She crouched at the water’s edge and watched a moment to be sure he wouldn’t turn around. Then she splashed water at him.
Tanner yelped at the feeling of the water against his thighs, and the little boy cracked up. So did Courtney, almost losing her balance in the process, which would not have been good, given that she was in a short skirt. She recovered herself enough to stand again. Tanner spun around. “You—You—” he sputtered through a grin.
“Me what?” Courtney put her hands on her hips. “Got a problem?”
“Yeah. People keep getting me wet,” Tanner muttered.
He moved close enough to her that his breath touched her face. She thought he planned to splash her back and prepared herself to be soaked. Instead, without warning, he scooped her up into his arms. “Should I drop you?” he growled softly into her ear.
“N–no.” She couldn’t help being just a little frightened. He’d picked her up as easily as a child. But at the same time, she knew he wouldn’t hurt her, and she couldn’t stop laughing at his reaction.
“Oh, all right,” he murmured. “But get this straight. You don’t get to make me wet. It’s supposed to be the other way around. Got it?”
A shiver of arousal ran through her at his clear meaning. “Got it.”
